I have read that H1B is not used to lower wages as H1B at Amazon get paid more than your average American. On the flip side H1B teams are likely to work 60+ hours and not fight for WFH. This benefits corporations while harmful to Americans despite the “H1B doesn’t lower wages look at levels.fyi”.
Because they’re doing something right? I heard they’re hiring (not necessarily prioritizing) US-born Indian Americans, which is awesome because they’re the ones to lose out to cheap imported labor. Let’s be honest the H1B system hurts both—the visa holder bc they get exploited as well as qualified labor right here at home. It’s funny to see folks complain about affirmative action and over representation of other minorities in education but not the over representation of recent-immigrants from India in tech who were prioritized over US citizens.
tech screen success rate for H1B applicants is much lower, so it's far more effort to find star candidates
Most H1Bs are good in PPTs.
Really? Almost all my friends are/were H1B, we never work more than other colleagues, and enjoy the same WFH and other benefits, and earn the same/similar comp (obviously depends on company). The type of H1B you are describing might be consulting contractors... not the majority of H1B full time in tech companies. Many start ups have little H1B, because they don't have immigration lawyers, and no experience dealing with immigration docs. It's easier to hire non H1B.
OpenAI uses Msft infrastructure. Cloud infrastructure is one of the hardest problems to solve even harder than AI itself. They generated so much computational power that enabled chatgpt to become a reality. Msft is full of H1Bs.
