For seniors, Google pays around $420k Meta pays around $450k Microsoft is arguably better than them in terms of company’s products/stability/market cap and OpenAI Things seem to be super going well for Microsoft and yet seems they pay $250k for seniors. Why this??
They can get folks they want at that price? 🤷🏽
The only right answer
Microsoft senior (63-64) map to SWE2/L4/E4 anywhere else. For that level they're still paid short but at least it's within a reasonable range. Microsoft is just really bad for career growth because essentially 59-60-61-62 are SWE1. Unless you're hired out of school at 61 (some are), you're just going to waste 5 years before advancing to SWE2 (63). Then you waste another 5 years going through 63-64. After 10 years you're finally at Principal (65) which is like L5/E5 outside, but nobody respects a Microsoft Principal as much as a Google L5 or Meta E5 anyway, so it's really a weak L5 at best.
61 and 62 are SWE 2 63 and 64 are Senior SWE.
That's what we call them but it's pretty obvious from the TC and who we hire into those roles that it's inconsistent with industry definitions.
maybe the revenue impact (or perceived impact) of someone at google or meta exceeds the revenue impact at MSFT. or maybe they feel their people are more easily replaceable due to tools, technology, skills needed etc.
Unpopular opinion but low pay due to mass hiring of L1 visa holders from 🇮🇳. Google is on its way to becoming the next Microsoft in terms of pay
Lol. It's really hard for people from India to move to US
plumbers are making more money than average software engineer because of H1 and L1 system. Make America Great Again 😃😃
If this is true all H1 and L1 people will be doing plumbing jobs.
Plumbers deserve every penny of their pay
This is a deliberate corporate strategy from Microsoft. They believe in hiring average quality people for cheap. Most of the time, success is not based on genius, but on hard work. What’s the catch? You end up with a lot of shitty products with tons of tech debt left by stupid people. There is always a group of competent people who don’t like to switch jobs and end up getting promoted, and when the stock goes up, they still end up great over the long term.
You mean money ball.
This is true, lot of competent folks in my team who just keep grinding away with no intention to switch , I wonder what keeps them motivated.
“Microsoft is arguably better than them in terms of company’s products and OpenAI” 😭
What you don’t like being told every 5 seconds to use bing and Cortana in windows?
Salesforce pays even less. And once you hear what investment bankers and lawyers make you realize how poor and worthless we all are
Not all Lawyers make bank and investment banking is very niche.
We are in big tech. The equivalent is big law and high finance. Those fields make way more and have actual career trajectories. Most of us won’t even make it past senior
Because even with lower pay it can attract decent enough engineers

Do people underestimate E6 role at meta?
Microsoft seniors are not really senior maps to principal at least. Company health doesn’t equal employees reaping the benefits usually.
First statement is lame. Microsoft 64 is 100% industry senior. I personally know many l63 who went to amazon at l6 and are successful.
Microsoft promotions can be very political and arbitrary, and the criteria changes across the board. So you will find seniors that are very talented, skilled and capable and you’ll find other seniors that are the opposite. There’s also people under the SWE title that don’t really “engineer software”. I know a senior SWE that the only thing he does is to write courses, doesn’t work in any software component and hasn’t done a single check-in in years.
