I was planning to move back in 2024. I hoped things would have improved in the last 8 years, but my first interview was like a dejavu although its just one incident but it looks like nothing has changed, still there are many egomaniac interviewers. I applied for a backeng engineer role at Uber…first interview was coding (I was asked an obscure DP problem, I solved it bht then he kept changing the out datatype , not the problem just the datatype like from array to list to map) lol it was funny but I kept my mouth shut. Second my system design..I used Cassandra explained my reason and usually people let you continue finish the design and then drill down on specifics…but he spent 25 min almost arguing why I am not using SQL…I kept answering…it almost felt like he was looking for a gotcha moment like a school boy…. I politely hinted there are only 8 minutes should we finish the flow first…his response “no worries I can stay for 30 more minutes”…he was 5 minutes late and now he wants to stick for 30more minutes…I politely said I cant stick longer I have a meeting…I quickly finished the design. I dint proceed further asked the HR to cancel the remaining rounds..if they blacklist me so be it but this was such a waste of time.. The incident almost made me question the decision to move back, but I will continue interviewing hopefully it was just one incident. End of rant. #tech TC: ~$415
I had very similar experience with Cisco interviewer for Bay area position. Feels sad to see things haven’t changed even after so many years!
You can't expect an American work culture in India. I would advise against moving back. You are probably not ready for India. 😂
You should have asked his tc at the end of the interview
May be…it used to be a thing in 2010…interviewers will ask obscure questions on purpose to show they are better but I thought things would have changed now with so many product companies establishing base in India but sadly nothing has changed😕
Who gets hired eventually? If they treat every candidate like this.
I’m not Indian but even I noticed when hiring managers recently from india living in nyc interview me it also feels soooo cringe and competitive like you describe
Indian managers are notoriously difficult and take things personally. Would never work for one again. Not to mention how nosy and biased they are.
Isnt amazon managers all Indian? I feel like there’s nowhere one can go to not get Indian managers
Because your people introduce terrible company culture that’s destroying the industry
Move back to india only if you want to start your own business.
OP how are the interviews normally in US? since I have only had couple of interviews outside india.
Its sort of same just that interviews are not trying to prove they know more they are trying to gauge if you are the right fit…obviously there are exceptions but more often than not it doesn’t feel like a competition😅

The work culture is completely different. I would recommend talking to people who have moved back to India after working in the US and see what they have to say. Huge difference in management styles too.
It's the Indian people in tech and management. Not just in India but even in USA. They're egomaniacs. They don't see you as your equal. They have to feel superior to you, and if you're good at what you do, then they turn into a child and play these shenanigans.
