For example if you have an offer from say company X which is known for working 60 hours a week vs company Y which is known for 40 hours a week. In this case shouldn’t you multiply the company X offer by 2/3 to compare? I don’t get why this seems to escape people on here? I just see everyone comparing absolute numbers. Like even people working service jobs (e.g mcdonalds, walmart) compare based on hourly wages.
I’m doing pretty OK if we do that. I work like 30 hours a week max
What area are you in? Do you have any tip for finding a team with good WLB?
I’m in a team that supports other roles. Productionizing workflows, etc
Because that's not how salaried employees work in the USA
some people only care about absolute numbers for maxing TC. if you tell me company Y is 40 hours a week you're also telling me my pay won't go up if I work 60 hours a week too that said, I'm sure the main reason it's not normalized is a) hours worked are team dependent, and intra company policy doesn't scale TC by hours worked either b) hours worked can also be seasonal so slow months can be 30 hrs and rough ones can be 50 hours worked is also sometimes a function of skill level, experience in a domain etc. it's just too many factors that it's pretty noisy unless you are doing apples to apples equivalent team comparison between companies
Yeah this makes sense 👍
Many reasons. You could do that if you were comparing two companies that were offering a contractual obligation with different hours (e.g. 40 weekly hours vs. 60 weekly hours). The number of hours mentioned for companies on blind are anecdotal cases and they don't really reflect how many hours you'd have to work. As an example, there is a difference between working long hours because you must (e.g. contractual obligation) or because it's a place that rewards extra hours (e.g. bonuses, fast promotions, extra equity, etc). There is also selection bias because a company that has a brand for not paying top dollars or giving big bonuses will attract people that are looking to work fewer hours while places with a brand for fast work and big bonuses will attract hardworkers (some of which would like to work long hours if the job is interesting). It's just not a good comparison and you can't really tell what your personal experience will be based on that. Also keep in mind that service jobs don't have things like refreshers, fast promotions and big bonuses to differentiate them so that metric does make sense there. I do think that there is value in talking about the work culture because that will definitely make a big difference for you (heck, i don't believe TC was ever a deciding factor for me in picking a company).
