RIP Google Core Employees replaced with Mexico and India Workers
I’ve always wondered why anybody would be comfortable with a 9-5. This Twitter story is a reality check. I know someone that had multiple good offers last year from top companies - Twitter, Apple, TikTok, etc and decided to go to Twitter because of culture and WLB. This is the same experience for many people. Now, the Wlb at twitter is waayyy worse than even TikTok or Amazon. It does not matter what company you work for - anything can happen - change in management, company gets acquired, etc. If you’ve never tried to build a side-business (especially if you’re an engineer), why not? (and don’t say you don’t have the time. Twitter folks that “didn’t have the time” are now working additional 10+ hours a week….wonder where the extra time came from)
Not everyone is business savvy. Some just want to work 9-5 and chill after
Lot of folks try and give up after a few failures .
Because a side business takes time and can take a lot more work than a 9-5 job. If you think a side business is more stable than having a salaried job I think you over estimate how easy it is for people to make one. If your side business fails, what’s easier. LC and join a new company or pivot/make another small business. It does not matter what small business you make - anything can happen - change in market, high churn due to not having time to support, etc.
Nobody said anything about being “stable”. Nothing is stable. Plus that’s why it’s called a “side business” - you keep your 9-5 and still work on the side business. Is it stressful-yes. Is it impossible-no (source: there are many people that do it. Many of them don’t even have the luxury of remote work for their 9-5 which makes it more stressful for them) Example: Brian Armstrong (like many founders) started working on Coinbase while he was still at Airbnb
The entire point of your post was Twitter wlb went to shit and you’re agreeing a side business is stressful and think people should add that on their work?
It’s the worst time in history to own a small business
Lol. What’s your time frame for “history” ? Because there have been far worse times to start a business
No there hasn’t been. You clearly don’t know what you’re doing or wouldn’t be asking. Then you go on the attack when people tell you things you don’t want to hear. Desi?
Here is a scenario, You go to college Get a 9-5 Work hard, do a side business Have little time for friends, family, vacations Die before 40
Fun fact. Did you know if you don’t like the direction your company is going you can quit your job? Gasp.
Being interview ready is way easier than starting and running a side business
Many people do both. Stay interview-ready and still run their side business
I’m sure you can. I think it’s just a trade off. I’ve run a side business before and it successfully made $100K/year for almost 6 years until it went away. And tbh I was relieved when I no longer had to focus on multiple things. And with a day job only I can stop thinking about it at 5pm and be present with my family instead.
What’s your side business OP?
I don't have any good ideas bro
It’s a side business, not an invention.
What color is your Bugatti?
Any idea for side business?
Buy or sell Real estate. Even better become a realtor 😝
https://therealdeal.com/2022/03/06/heres-why-there-are-more-real-estate-agents-now-than-ever-before/ "More than 156,000 people became real estate agents in 2021 and 2020 combined — nearly 60 percent more than the two previous years — as Americans looking for work during a pandemic found a hot housing market as an answer to their prayers."
