Why everyone is obsessed with good school rating?

Houses with high school ratings are so much more expensive. You can buy much better house in Redwood City vs Sunnyvale. Do people look beyond just one number? Or do they care about equity? Here are my personal stories. My friends kids graduated from an IB program in Sequoia High School (6/10). It has a large hispanic attendance similar to Menlo Atherton High School. But there were no drugs or anything like that. Teachers from Stanford. They all got to very good universities - Stanford, Berkeley, Duke. They are Asians. I also have a friend whose daughter graduated from the Palo Alto High School, and she is having mental health issues and didn’t go to college. On greatshools do people check test scores? E.g. white kids in Sequoia have 88% in english and 80% in math, in Palo Alto high school they got 84% in english an 74% in math. I also read that admission officers prefer kids from different schools. Isn’t it better for a kid to be in a diverse environment that still prepares them well academically? Currently renting in Redwood City. Work is 15 min drive. Thinking about buying a house here. TC: 240k

Dam, y so harsh? Bought at peak?

Any highschool in the bay area will have enough options for kids who care. Actual bad schools don't really exist there.

Meta justape Apr 7, 2022

Op you are smart

People are fucking idiots. It’s a bunch of people who didn’t go to school in the bay area so they go off these so called “ratings” because of “prestige”. Mommy and daddy work for “prestige”. Mommy and daddy blow big bucks for teenager to be depressed and contemplate life.

Well said! That’s it so much

Same people are so clueless and they end up doing their kids a disservice. In highly competitive schools, kids are less likely to be in top 4%. There is actually a state program where top 4% of students automatically gain admission to multiple UCs.

After a certain age influence by peers maters more over parents. If they are in a school full of kids who don’t value education then odds are they won’t either. Before you start your anecdote, remember that is the exception, not the norm

TuSimple TooSimplee Apr 7, 2022

This is simply not true. Those who value education will continue to value it whether or not others do.

What about the test scores I pointed to? Underprivileged kids have low scores everywhere. But others actually have higher scores in Sequoia. I looked at the university admissions and everyone from the IB program got into good schools so it is not an exception. Same for Menlo Atherton. As a kid you still have an influence of peers that value education.

Completely agree! Probably people are just going by what their peers are telling them and scared to break the mold. And probably a bit of racism as well

Millennium Management ឵឵ Apr 7, 2022

Definitely fueled by racism.

Racism 💯

Because people have stupid kids and want them to go to elite schools anyway.

True. Did you go to an ivy? Are you happy with the way it turned out? Just try the best you can get with minimal effort for such things like house location, job, university, car. Pretty much applies to anything that has a brand value. Life is larger than that.Else everything becomes a mechanical rat race.

It’s called herd mentality

IB program, hello!!!!!????? You are NOT talking about normal school, you’re talking about a VERY academically rigorous international program. Also, NOT everyone can be admitted into IB. So you basically have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to IB and only a small percent can get in.

VMware vmyou OP Apr 8, 2022

What I am trying to say is that there are opportunities everywhere. People don’t look beyond the school ratings, how kids pass the test, what programs are offered in schools. They just see a number and pay a million over.

VMware vmyou OP Apr 8, 2022

Calypso, my friend who had kids in IB says kids choose an IB program themselves. You don’t need to pass a test to get in. This is same as an AP. You pass the test at the end to get credit. If you get enough credits you get an IB diploma.
