Why is Blind so toxic?
When I was in college, computer science and the software industry seemed far more welcoming than it is on Blind now. I feel like people here only really care about TC. Whenever I see Blind posts, they berate people based off TC, where they live, maybe even their race, etc. Even advice seems to be derogatory and harmful. Go ahead and call me a snowflake ❄️, naïve, or whatever. I want to know if others feel the same way and why Blind has this culture. Yoe: 2 TC: 200k

Politics is pretty toxic 😌
When I was in college, the tech community was even less toxic. Rare to get 100k offers as a SWE in the Bay Area as a fresh grad. You didn’t get in it for the money. It’s changed now though. Money got into people’s heads. Now people are motivated by TC rather than the love of the game. But the best are always motivated by the love of the game. You know them when you see them.
I’ve been quite lucky to have good mentors, and I do agree that those who are in it for the passion seem to perform better than those who are just in it for the TC.
People are only hyper focused on the money because it's impossible to afford a middle class life in the Bay anymore. Housing is completely broken there. Can't blame people for not loving the game when trying to play it means you have to sacrifice so much (kids, house, car, security)
Anonymous forums bring out the worst in people. Have you never been to 4chan? You complain about people only caring about TC. TC determines what kind of life we can have. It's very important but completely taboo to talk about in professional settings. So of course it is the main focus here. Do you also go on TikTok and complain that people only care about lip syncing and cosplay?
Naa TikTok is for entertainment. Blind can be used for entertainment, but I don’t use it as primarily as that. I see it more as a somewhat professional forum

All anonymous forums with minimal moderation eventually devolve into toxicity. The trick is to fight fire with fire 👌
I almost never talk about TC at work. TC is an important part of work that's taboo to talk about at work or really anywhere non-anonymous. So people disproportionately talk about it here where it's safe.
That does make a lot of sense. I wouldn’t talk about that with my coworkers. It really makes me wonder if they’re on Blind and do the same things I’ve described
Content creation self-selects people with extreme opinions, in Blinds case negative ones. Few people with average experiences who are normal post as much as angry people.
Blind is a place to talk TC and gossip about my company, since I can't do it with my coworkers. I suspect it's similar for most people. Thats why the disproportionately "toxic" comments come out here. I have had some conversations recently with coworkers about Blind, and they're on it too.
TC is just part of the humor here, tons of the TC people say here are fake TC: 500M
