Why is Bloomberg a good tech company?

Sorry I don't mean this the wrong way, but I study at an internship-oriented university and bloomberg always has a TON of applications; often more than facebook, google, etc. I recently saw a comment in our subreddit where someone said they'd reccommend bb over uber that made me think again, and I also know they have a difficult interview process in terms of the problems they ask. I've never really understood, why is bb a prestigious tech company? I thought it was kind of like a stocks-oriented news outlet, but I know that could be wrong because I don't use it much lol What is bloomberg upto in terms of cool software engineering? #bloomberg #engineering #swe #software

Bloomberg is decent, but it's definitely not better than all the companies you listed (Uber, Google, and Facebook). I would put it on roughly the same tier as Amazon. Maybe slightly lower than Amazon.

Microsoft kUCR50 Jun 7, 2021

Bloomberg is certainly better than Amazon and Uber. They can give base for 250k plus if you nail tech interview. They also have really strong engineers.

Google bobybooty Jun 7, 2021

@kUCR50 Their max level is senior SWE and averages $235k in NYC according to levels.fyi. That's not even comparable to packages at Amazon and Uber. Not saying they're bad, but I wouldn't say they're certainly better than Amazon/Uber. Even at $250k base for Senior SWE, Amazon and Uber are pushing up to $400k in NYC total comp for equivalent roles. Unless BB has some insane WLB or significantly better culture, I'd still go w Amazon/Uber/Microsoft

> Bloomberg L.P. is a privately held financial, software, data, and media company headquartered in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. > Bloomberg L.P. provides financial software tools and enterprise applications such as analytics and equity trading platform, data services, and news to financial companies and organizations through the Bloomberg Terminal (via its Bloomberg Professional Service) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomberg_L.P. So...yea...they sell software to traders

Facebook boatyboat Jun 7, 2021

It does get really high ratings on Blind

Barclays PLC EBuu42 Jun 7, 2021

Bloomberg grosses 10 billion per year in revenue and has made Mike Bloomberg the 8th richest person in the world. This is not from the news or media portion of the business. That in fact is cost negative, and is used largely as advertising for the real product and revenue producer, the Bloomberg Terminal. This is a 25k / subscription that has become essential for those working in markets.

Amazon vghnn67ds Jun 7, 2021

Yeah it’s as engrained as excel is at this point. Every alternative is lacking features and so many financial companies would take years to migrate off of it.

Google bobybooty Jun 7, 2021

It's not. They're decent don't get me wrong, but internship prestige != reality. I've seen a lot of stupid internship choices just to try and flex. Like interning at the same company 4-5 times, or giving up a FTE offer at FB to intern at BB, etc. I've seen some of the new grad and experienced packages at BB and they don't pay top of market AFAIK. They do have have decent talent and exit ops though. For new grad, between Uber and BB it's marginal. Experience hire? Uber every fuckin time

Microsoft kUCR50 Jun 7, 2021

Folks here have no idea what they are talking about. Bloomberg is really a good prestigious company in fin tech world. Companies like Two sigma and Bloomberg will put your TC of Google/FB to shame. It’s not a tech focused company but honestly how many people in tech companies get beyond Senior/staff level? At those levels the WLB and pay is much better in fin tech companies.

Google questforqu Jun 7, 2021

Lol Bloombeg comp definitely doesn't put Google or Facebook or any other upper-tier tech company to shame.

Google switche Jun 7, 2021

Bloomberg won't Two sigma will

Bloomberg is very respectable Not everyone can get into a Google or Facebook right out of college (took me 2.5 years to get into fb and I failed a ton of interviews getting there). It's better than most financial companies but not as good as a pure tech company in terms of salary or perks but has equally good exit opportunities since it's a household name. Bloomberg sells software to people in the financial services industry. It's as integral to the financial services companies as git is to software companies. Their product is the bloomberg terminal which is a one stop shop for all financial data. And when I say all I mean ALL information you could possible want as well as a messenger that can instantly connect you to anyone else in the finance industry. As you can imagine with billions of dollars on the line, their product is solid af but old. It was built in the 80s or 90s on c++ but it is a very mature product. Meaning very little innovation and mostly adding new features here and there. I think it's a great place to start but not stay when you're young. Great place if you want to chill and have great wlb with great but not amazing tc. My friend left bbg after 3.5 years and got E5 offers at fb, L5 at google, and offers from quant firms (2 sig + hrt).

Oh gotcha, that explains a lot! Thanks :)

Citibank mj0Y7 Jun 7, 2021

Oh and 1 word of warning about bbg Once you leave you're blacklisted. So if you want to work there and rest/chill, do it later in your career and don't start off working there. Once you're in, you can't leave and come back

Microsoft gcplowbar Jun 7, 2021

Apparently the bar is very high. Phone screen got 2 meds. 1 onsite round 3 mediums then another round 1 med 1 hard. I didn't finish the hard and got a reject

Bloomberg lnNp67 Jun 8, 2021

As someone who worked at Bloomberg for 4 years, I'd put it on par with Amazon - probably a bit better if you consider WLB. Talent is decent and people are generally smart, but I think of Bloomberg the same way I think of Cornell: it's good for sure, but most people at Bloomberg would jump at the chance to leave for FB/Google.

Bloomberg gzz235 Jun 8, 2021

True and nicely put

Bloomberg TC is super low and no rsus . Please don’t compare with FAANG.
