I’ve been told there is a queue of 100s of MLEs already in Google that are desperately trying to internally transfer to Gemini. So why did Google publish a job for mid-senior MLE to work on Gemini? Job Link: https://www.google.com/about/careers/applications/jobs/results/100622349524443846-software-engineer-iii-machine-learning-gemini Is it possible that none of the internal transfer candidates passed their interviews? Edit: Added a poll to compile opinions. #tech #google #gemini #machinelearning TC: $270K
They started as a company that only hired smart generalists who they would be able to move onto any project. It turned out there weren't enough smart generalists to write all the code they wanted so they lowered the hiring bar to the point that teams no longer trust an internal transfer will be able to contribute unless they've done the exact role being hired for.
Internal transfers are fed up with Google culture and promo politics and are probably going to jump ship at the first chance they get. Google hiring managers are now realizing this and prefer to hire externally.
Yep. Googler here. Desperately trying to get off this sinking ship.
Publishing the role is a legal requirement for fair competition, you can still hire internally but you need to post the role for 3-5 days. At least in Europe.
Google doesn’t have a monopoly on smart folk. Some of the least talented people I’ve worked with are here Coincidentally they’re the ones with the biggest egos and flex “muh prestige” Also Gemini does not have the best public image right now lol. If all these ppl were geniuses then we wouldn’t have had 2-3 mishaps in a row for our AI tool
They should internally hire the same people asleep at the wheel while MS/OpenAI made them look like idiots? Hiring externally is a good idea.
When is Sundar getting fired by the board?
External hires are almost always better

I am starting to think Chinese interviewers currently fail non-Chinese candidates on purpose.
Maybe to get diverse viewpoint and gain knowledge outside of google or to get better talent from competition
