Why is everything on fire at Uber???

Many said "everything is on fire at Uber, avoid at all costs" why is this so? #uber #product #tech #jobopening #interview

It was the case an year ago. RN it looks pretty positive

Things are fine IMO. Most people at Uber are relatively seasoned (2-6 years at the company) so a lot of it is people being jaded. Also some relatively frequent reorg around mid to high level which makes people gossip and buzz. From an IC perspective, it’s nothing bad and actually a lot of work to be done

What team are you on? How's the WLB?

Uber pinkthink Apr 3, 2021

Eats. WLB is pretty good. Different teams are relatively different though depending on on-call issues

As a user, I use Lyft a lot more than Uber lately.

Facebook MgIF40 Apr 3, 2021

Sorry but how’s this helpful?

Okta pwqrtbmnx Apr 3, 2021

And I also use MeWe a lot than Facebook and Instagram lately. Is that helpful?

Uber gives good salaries to attract talent, however, the company culture sucks. Employees are taken for granted, lay-offs happen every 6 months, incompetent VPs and Directors - they are really Sr managers atmost. Dumpster fire, stay away!

Uber pinkthink Apr 3, 2021

Mmm not so sure about. Layoffs I agree with for the past couple years but bigger companies do them too just less media attention. Culture isn’t horrible but not as fun as smaller companies. Probably basically the same as FAANG. leadership changes is a mix of good and bad but currently pretty good. I think Uber has grown a lot under new CEO

Buddy, there is a big difference between putting folks on pip vs mass lay-offs. Other companies keep trimming the fat based on performance; at Uber, they take out big slices at least once a year.

Because they started opening offices in India the quality goes down fast

Uber pinkthink Apr 3, 2021

This maybe true to unfortunately

I used to think so too before I joined uber. It was my firm belief that indians are bad at code, being an indian myself. But then when I saw what people over at SF are writing. It's complete garbage code with mismatched comments and missing unit tests, there are deep design issues and this is in freshly developed services. Amsterdam people are still writing decent code, maybe the best amongst the 3 sites. No new services are developed in India and we just get the maintainance of an old legacy projects, but still people give a fuck about the small new changes made to it.
