Why are so many people talking about the MSFT layoffs as if it’s such a big thing? Only 1% were laid off which comes out to around 1800 people or so. Layoffs are necessary to cut out unneeded expenses. If you don’t bring in enough revenue, if the company doesn’t see enough value in retaining you — why should they keep paying you? Remember, both parties (employer and employee) are in it for the money and employment is at will. Funnier is some people complaining that Kathleen Hogan was OOF. Why do you think you’re entitled to otherwise? Her job was done. What do you expect — her to come to each one of you with a box of tissues, or offer a shoulder to cry on? The market is hot. Recruiters are hounding people on LinkedIn. And it was MSFT that laid you off — I’m sure people can find a job that pays 2x. TC: 250k YOE: 3
Great post. Most of us are loss averse that’s the reason. While I am writing this , I am realizing I need to step up my game now that I have got my accelerated vesting
If you get riffed you're going to make it a big deal.
Because it’s heartbreaking for people to lose their jobs with no warning, especially when they already have a lot on their plate.
A lot on their plate? What is that? And why is it heartbreaking? Do you expect the company to keep paying people who are not useful to them any more ?
How would you feel if you were randomly pulled into a meeting and laid off? Probably not great
Couple of reasons. Getting laid off is not pretty for anyone. For some damage is more mental than financial. Msft is a very large and stable company. Forget cash reserves but look at profits and such. Because of this folks don't expect msft to conduct layoffs. Msft doing layoffs sends chills for everyone else. If such a large stable profitable behemoth can do rifs, how will rest of companies Fare?

What’s OOF? Out of … (let your imagination run wild)
Microsoftism. It's how a lot of people say out of office. I think the origin is an old app that called out of office "Out of Facility".
