Unions are for commies
Because people assume union = can't be fired. Which is false. You can have a union and still reward high performers and fire slackers. It's very simple really, why can't we all agree RTO and stack ranking sucks? Most of us are afraid to get fired for our opinions, which is why we don't organize.
Exactly, it's very hard having an open conversation without any repercussions.
If you see the amount of woke propaganda that’s encouraged (nah celebrated!) at big tech, you would change your mind on this “can’t speak your mind” nonsense.
It won't happen in Canada. The companies will lobby the government to make SWE essential workers, like teachers, pretty much eliminating the benefit of collective bargaining. Edit: in BC (where Vancouver is), tech workers are exempt from overtime pay.
How much of your check would you be willing to part with to pay for the benefits you are already receiving? Do you want to be rewarded for merit and hardwork or just based on tenure and not be able to be rewarded for excellent work? Talk about great way to stifle innovation.
It's not about stifling innovation. How come the management doesn't get accountable for their bad decisions? They bring in fancy consultants who advise on new projects which for most of the time flop and they hire the same consultants to see how they can better operate who advice on laying off a bunch. When will management be held accountable. Atleast when unions are present they can't take hasty decisions
@VaderYond,yes they can. And they do in place with Unions too. Look what happened Detroit and Auto industry a while back, and then again in 2008, and then again every now and then a plant closes.
Feel free to move to China with that union BS.
I left Germany because I wanted to make use of my somewhat unique strengths. If I got paid according to a tariff I couldn't really do that. I would likely make half of what I'm making. It's also relatively easy to take a new job elsewhere, at least in my line of work. Because it's easy to fire. People in France or Germany have more interest in stability and social equality. That's ok. I for my part have zero interest in unions.... Also, consider an example of highly paid professionals operating in a unionized environment: airline pilots and legacy carriers (think: Delta, United...). They do quite well once they're senior enough, plenty of free time, but near zero flexibility of moving jobs without losing their seniority, which dictates a lot. Their nature of work isn't so much one of merit and ingenuity - but of doing the job "correctly". Maybe unionization suits that line of work, and others. But not us in tech...
There's no merit or ingenuity in big tech, levels are assigned based on standardized leetcode tests, your output is determined by a clueless PM/CEO tells you what to work on, or your luck finding scope, promotions are rare/political, you are cog and need to the job correctly or get pipped. Also, companies downlevel a lot. There's no guarantee you will get senior if you jump anymore.
Unions are for when you are obsolete and want to protect yourself by stealing from your children
I like unions, many in my family are in them. But let’s be honest, it’s really for untalented and non motivated people. People who chose a job that isn’t hard to do.

That’s cause anti-union fear has been fed into the American minds going back decades. Just wait and see how fellow peasants come on this thread and scream “unions bad!” while companies layoff people that helped get them record profits.
this.
