What are the real monetary benefits to joining a company before IPO? How do we estimate the potential gains in RSUs?#ipo #preipo #startup #tc
Like series C or D is a solid mark for risk vs benefit
More like series G
You can be multimillionaire at series G?
How far before IPO are you talking? Time horizon, funding, and imminence of IPO all factor in.
More like RH stage. If companies extend offers in the form of currency units, how does that factor into the post IPO gains
I joined DD a month before IPO and my RSU 4x (now 3x since stock went down).
I joined zoom when they thought stock would be worth $16 apiece and they provided a stock grant according to that valuation. IPOd at 32 and since has skyrocketed, lots of value in joining early
If the equity grant is offered in currency (eg 400k)rather than units (40), does that help lock in the same kind of gains?
Of course it’s offered in currency, but that currency is then translated into RSUs at the current share price and locked in.
I almost joined a company pre-IPO with options at $3 a share. Five years later, they had IPOed, and they were valued at $50 a share.
Insane stuff!
Which company @workday
Guidewire Software. Me sad.
Lots of survivorship bias on blind. You could get filthy rich if you join the right startup, but more than likely you’ll end up with less than what you would have made at FAANG; I’m 3 for 3 (if Instacart is included) but I consider myself just extremely lucky. I know people who LOST money buying ISOs and having them worth less when their company had exit events. If a company tells you that you should accept some shitty stock package because they’re going to 100x, just ignore :D
