Not sure why people are big fans of it. Everyone’s camera is off , there is no actual networking or building relationships at work. How are you supposed to grow and build your career behind a zoom screen? No big growth startup or innovation is happening over zoom where everyone is passed out or snoring and only 2 people are talking. Hybrid makes the most sense as at least there is some face time in person to meet with people and see them as human beings and not your github reviewers. Just sitting in a basement and having no human interaction in your career is a recipe for not caring about your career , work and just slacking off What’s stopping a company from just hiring people in India or Philippines to do same work? Most Americans are stupid anyway , let alone even fewer are competent enough to learn tech skills
People who bullshit around talk about networking, office parties etc. Some of the most knowledge people I have worked with were always remote. I learnt more from them than anyone else
Yet you're still at ebay
And you're at Course Hero. Maybe one day you can land a prestigious job at New like me
There are careers where networking and regular face-to-face meetings are beneficial, but software engineering isn’t one of them. The most productive years of my career have been since going remote.
How is being alone in your room actually growing your career
Time to read, time to think. So many fewer nonsense interruptions
This sounds like WFH done poorly. We always have cameras on unless in a very large meeting, and we meet up every 6 months or so in person to build connections.
Agree, WFH with camera on is very different. We also meet up in person to help build camaraderie
Wow sounds amazing
To me theres no real benefit to networking and relationships. Imo, it allows people who shouldnt be high up in the chain to get high up. It forms a clique in your group and its not fun for anyone outside of it. It creates a somewhat toxic work environment there too. Why is it always about basements to people? Thats so stereotypical it hurts. Fam Im looking out windows next to my work desk, not stuck in a dank basement. As for whats stopping companies from hiring overseas? Code quality primarily. Have you seen a lot of overseas code? Fam, contractors at my company use notepad to code java.
Why would they use notepad instead of IntelliJ?
Is your company hiring babies to write code 😂
If you are having a hard time networking and building relationships, then that’s a personal problem not a wfh problem
So true
Hybrid mode with 2 days of focus work from home makes most sense. Nothing can replace the effectiveness of in person interactive discussions, brainstorming and problem solving. It's possible that certain roles will continue remain fully remote in tech. Industry is sucked into false notion of wfh productivity. Software engineering is going backwards. It's about time all tech companies realize this.
What if your team is distributed across different locations and time zones out of necessity?
It certainly varies by roles and projects. I don't mean the teams should all be one location. Distributed teams with different timezones is a must and certainly good thing if you work in large org and various distributed projects within them, it also helps with operations focused needs with continuous support. If you have a team of 5 people focused on a specific complex project with too many involved dependencies and nuances. The effectiveness of in person discussions, brainstorming sessions, design, strategy discussions is irreplaceable even with all the remote tools..
If you’re a slacker RTO won’t change it lol:) If you hustle you can network and build relationships via Slack easily. Good work and good work ethic speak for themselves.
Just go o to the office unless someone is stopping you. Worked from home for 11 years and counting and could careless about workplace relationships. If someone want to promote you they will and if they don’t they won’t it doesn’t matter
"Career growth" is a scam to make employees do more work than they are paid to do. The best thing you can do for career growth is to interview and get a higher paying external offer. Recognizing that social interactions can extend well beyond face to face communications is necessary in today's society where you might need to work with folks across multiple continents. As for why not just outsource the jobs, English fluency is probably the biggest barrier.
Not necessarily higher paying, just better. Pay cut with better wlb, benefits, mission, etc.

If your team does daily standups, your manager is a micromanager
By being able to concentrate on work. I worked much more and efficiently from home.
I guess you are on the side of being asked for help instead of asking for help
Nah, I'm on both sides. It depends on the context. If someone asks me for help, I will help. But if I'm asking for help, I want it written down. So Slack is much more useful.
