Why won't Google consider current salary when negotiating?

Just got an L3 offer for 200k TC. Currently make 220k TC but Google refuses to match it. I work for a public company that gives RSUs so I don't understand why there should be any concern. Do I really have to go through the FB interview process to get a higher offer? Seems silly to me. 1.5 YOE

220 TC at yelp?

Yelp mobile_eng OP Oct 22, 2018

Yes

LinkedIn FightClub Oct 22, 2018

There is a huge supply for L3 and L4. Those are super mediocre levels at google now. So they don’t have to pay you a lot from their perspective

Google zusammen Oct 22, 2018

This is so not true. They are finding it hard to hire L4s. The cost to find another L3 as opposed to giving this candidate 40k or so more is high. Also, google won't consider your current comp into account while giving you an offer. They only value competing offers from selected tech firms. There are 1k+ L4 openings. Don't pass false information.

Why do they not consider current comp if the candidate would consider staying if Google can’t match? It’s their BATNA as much as a competing offer— or maybe more so.

Seattle or Bay Area?

Yelp mobile_eng OP Oct 22, 2018

Bay Area for current company and Google

Visa Qwi Oct 22, 2018

You are doing really good!!

Google hw22 Oct 22, 2018

Typically your current comp isn’t automatically matched. This is true even going between top companies.

Yelp mobile_eng OP Oct 22, 2018

But what's the reasoning behind this?

Apple cho Chang Oct 22, 2018

They assume that the fact that you’re looking for a new job means you’re likely to leave even without the same TC. Obviously it’s not true but that’s the rationale.

Google Noogler69 Oct 22, 2018

They’re probably hoping you’ll take the offer and switch to get Google on your résumé. There’s most likely some room for negotiation.

SAP 7sju62km Oct 22, 2018

There is no obligation to match nor you are obligated to accept.

Yelp mobile_eng OP Oct 22, 2018

That's fair. I was just trying to figure out why a competing offer would have any more weight than my current salary. Seems other commenters have some reasonable explanations.

As it is becoming (now?) illegal in a lot of places to ask people their current salary , big companies are starting to stop considering current salary to avoid the perception they are asking for current salary

Yelp mobile_eng OP Oct 22, 2018

Hm that's definitely a possibility. Lame because I willingly gave my current salary and actually do want it to be considered haha.

Visa Qwi Oct 22, 2018

Just in CA as far as I know

Visa Qwi Oct 22, 2018

Why are you switching btw? It seems you are doing good. I recommend to wait for a year or two and then change levels.

Yelp mobile_eng OP Oct 22, 2018

Actually Google reached out to me. I thought they were going to offer me at least my current comp, just based on what I've seen on Blind, so I did the interviews.

Visa Qwi Oct 22, 2018

Yeah that sucks - don’t trust blind blindly 😊 Everyone on blind makes 500k and above.

Google hw22 Oct 22, 2018

How do you make that much at Yelp after 1.5 years and no stock appreciation?
