I mean the culture is horrible, the pay is horribel (no refreshers, horrendous vest plan) and there are no perks either so why?? I cannot think of any reason except may be if you are is on a visa or you are broke without any emergency fund like you cant afford to be jobless for a few months. TC: ~$700 #tech
you know…..it’s not by choice. Most of us have to work here because we have nowhere else to go
The barrier to entry is low, the brand is well recognized, if you can develop thick skin to sustain there, you can pretty much work anywhere else.
The barrier to entry is low only compared to F/G, but the barrier to interview is much lower.
FAANG brand value, comp
Comp and I really like what we do. 10 years here. ~600K TC 2024. L6 SDM, seattle. Great WLB (never worked a weekend last 5 years, my team averages 30-35 hrs per week)
I worked there in the beginning of my career (not SWE). Tbh what I really liked there (and miss at G) was a true ability to get shit done with little red tape. Was a lowly L4 and got to implement some pretty cool ideas. Yeah it's a tough culture and there is less emphasis on social cohesion than at G (which is frankly also a problem because you cannot say things the way they are oftentimes), the pay is at best okay and the perks non existent, but frankly, as a junior I'd do it again just because I got to learn a lot.
Same here. Amazon is not for everyone and not a forever job. It is designed this way and if you go there with your eyes open to this truth then you learn a lot and also will have enormous impact.
Same here. I got to build Foundation Models and put them in prod. A lot of learning opportunities in NLP for someone who knew only basic ML. I know I am marketable for my next job. That’s why I sucked it up and did it.
I joined because they were open to me working remotely, and because there are no tech companies in my area outside of blockchain scams and web dev body shops. I currently work from a FC, because I have a friend here that lets me work in their office area, and because my manager is just happy to have people badging in consistently... The culture is shit, and if the tech industry picks up again I can see Amazon truly struggling to hire again. Jassy took an already poor reputation, and somehow made it even worse. People now join because they're desperate, and current employees don't see a future beyond PIP or the next layoff cycle for their org. I mean no hyperbole when I say that Amazon is a bad stock dip from a new CEO and a need for a seismic culture shift. The Bezos era is now over, and Jassy has proved that it cannot be carried over by existing employees.
Does Amazon still allow remote work ?
lol no I can only get away with it because Amazon don't check what office you work from. I can work from the local fulfilment center, even though I'm supposed to be 200 miles away (the only person in my team based in this area).
My salary jumped from 200k(prev company) to 535k this year. Been here 4 years and averaged 35-40 hours. Work is exciting and team is supportive. Best manager as well. So not sure what’s not to like.
What's you level and role?
Got promoted to L7 recently , SA role
Money and the chance to be noticed by much better FAANG companies. That’s the only reason I’ve seen anyone on Blind defend Amazon. I’ve leveraged the same criticisms about Amazon, but every time my TC and company are brought up instead of addressing legitimate criticisms about the company and how they treat tech workers, not to mention the negative impact they’ve had on the industry through companies trying to replicate their PIP culture or through spreading their managers around (though they themselves are victims of Amazon’s toxic culture). If a WITCH company operated in the same way that Amazon does, they would be criticized to all Hell, but because Amazon throws money around to feed its PIP machine and mercenary culture, it somehow gets a pass? TC: 105K
But pay isn't horrible, was given 180k at entry level Currently sitting 320k How is it bad? In the past 5 years I only had 1 bad team and manager but yet see a total toxic blond experience.
Pay is not bad. You get refreshers for being at the top 10% year over year. So basically if you slave away your life, your TC will be fine. Amazon also has one of the fastest growth for engineers. Totally agree on the shit place though. Just that people have their own priorities

Amazon wouldn't be in my top 50 companies to work for list. I have managers coming from Amazon and they have destroyed team culture.
Same hate them
This! Cannot agree more. They bring shit culture and are always at the throat of their directs. No freedom to work, constant pressure
