I am an L5 applied scientist in the Alexa AI team in Cambridge UK. I did an internship last summer. Then started full time in April. My circumstances changed now. My wife got an offer for an MSc at NYU. I'd like to support her and move to the NY office. Hovever, to get visa sponsorship and everything, the official requirement is to have been with Amazon for 1 year (as an L5). Otherwise I need special approval. Or I could just not ask for visa sponsorship but I am not sure what that entails. Is it just me paying for it ? How much ? Or is there more to the idea of sponsorship that financial support ? E.g. making sure I get it . Other options include working in the same team but from the US , working remotely. Not sure what that entails either. #amazon #transfer Do you think Amazon will support me? TC: 150k GBP, about 188k USD. Much lower that in the US I presume. YOE: <1
It's not just policies. To qualify for an L1 visa you need to have been at a foreign subsidiary for >1y, they might not be able to get it for you otherwise
But for L6 and higher levels there is no restriction.
When I went through it with a FANG more than a decade ago, the blanket agreement required 12 months in a foreign subsidiary. It wasn't a company decision, it was a US government regulation. The Wikipedia page also mentions that requirement for L1 visas. L1 visas allow you to apply for a green card in case you're interested.

Sorry I am new to blind. I really don't know what you mean. Do you want me to also append to the post what my total compensation is ?
yeah this is blind tax that you need to mention your TC and yrs of experience in any post that you put.
Hey OP. Welcome to Blind and congrats on the job. The H1B program is employer-centric. Your employer has to go to bat for you, explaining why they need you in the US (and they can’t find an existing citizen or permanent resident). So you can’t go through it on your own, you need sponsorship. Googling around led me to a helpful UChicago Office of International Affairs page “Spouses and partners of international students”, which you may wish to check out. In short: it’s complicated. The US immigration process sucks. If you want to stay in the states long term, go through the H1B process
Are you phd?
Yea
It’s worth asking your manager and seeing if leadership will make an exception. The worse that can happen is they say no and wait until your year mark
If L1 you won’t get it so fast. Law says you need some minimum employment on your island before coming here
I think one year is compulsory irrespective of your level. Amazon says min 1 year at L5+ role. Amazon VP level exception may cover level, you can be L4 but the YOE exception seems impossible.

I might be out of touch but I am unsure what you mean.
