I was at Google for 2.75 years before joining Meta. My tenure there was very mediocre at best. Had joined at L3 and stayed the same forever. Always got CME. It was simply not a good fit, plus manager was more of TL than people manager, so never had any conversations around growth ever. It was my first job so I had no baseline for a what to expect from a manager. I don’t feel like i worked for those 3 years at all. After 2.25 years, I felt that I’ll be put on PIP, get an NI at best or be fired, so I changed teams whatever I could get. Given the record of CMEs for so long, basically I just needed some time to survive and accepted any team that would take me. I’m sure I would have gotten an NI if I hadn’t switched teams. In all this, I think I avoided NI rating, but I would like to know if I will get blacklisted or something because of poor performance, not enough work. Will I ever be about to go back? Would Manager have written bad things about me on record? In general relationship with both managers was not bad but nothing special at all. I’m afraid my first manager might have written some concerning things because he had started a document with me to track what active things I’m working on and whether I’m blocked. This was the reason why I thought I’ll be put on PIP soon. Will I ever be able to go back to Google? At higher level? I’m E4 at FB. Liking it here and have a good environment to Promo to 5 in like 1.5 years. I plan to stay for 2 years or until I get to L5 at least at Meta. One lesson learnt: If you are struggling, feeling unmotivated at work; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are not good enough, don’t immediately switch careers. Consider different teams, companies. 4 YoE , 280k
What CME and NI
Chill. I know a couple of people who had a similar experience as yours. You’re better off at Meta and other cooler companies than G. I’m also a Xoogler but I never see myself going back there. Unless as a manager at L7+.
Why not stay at meta and get 6 and then go back?
Can i ask what’s your experience at google been like regarding growth and mentorship Has it been like OPs?
What is Ops? Growth is frustrating and mentorship is OK . After L5 every level means a different role and whether you have sponsors feed you the resources matters a LOT
