Tech companies to avoid as a white guy?
Kind of a weird situation came up with a training at work, and I’m curious as to whether others agree with my thought process. We had a company wide DEI training, which was fairly comprehensive. I agreed with most points except one that came up at the end. The instructor was walking through respecting other’s pronouns/etc as shown in email sigs , slack descriptions, internal directory, etc. The instructor then mentioned that even binary cis -confirming people should have their pronouns in their email signatures/slack/etc as a gesture of allyship. Essentially, the thought process was that by de stigmatizing gender broadly, people with different gender preferences will feel more comfortable expressing themselves. That makes sense to me as well, but the instructor then went on to say “in fact, not actively sharing your pronouns can be viewed as a form of trans phobia” (exact quote). This rubbed me the wrong way - it implies that the act of sharing pronouns is almost a requirement… and that by not sharing your pronouns, you are somehow actively discriminating. I’m all for people sharing their pronouns and respecting said pronouns…. But I strongly disagree with the idea of compelling people to share their pronouns by strongly implying that to do otherwise is a choice rooted in hate. Am I thinking about this all wrong?
Wtf … instructor is a woke ❄️. I will never, ever put my pronouns in Slack or email.
I think you’re okay. The key for me is “can be viewed” - you have to realize that those who object to the concept of pronouns and all they represent still want to keep their jobs, so it’s almost like an act of silent rebellion to *not* put their pronouns. And so if you also don’t put your pronouns, you’re lumping yourself with that crowd, for better or for worse.
No. Are companies still dealing with this woke crap given the tight economy? I thought they had a reality check.
Forcing cis-people to share their pronouns is cis-phobia. Forcing anyone to share their pronouns is an invasion of privacy. Looks like the instructor was a bigot. Do not hire them for further events.
You are normal. Don’t let them make you doubt your sanity. Also this is how they can keep getting a paycheck. The more people who buys into this the more calls they get for more trainings.
I am Spartacus! That's the entire point. Will you show solidarity with people who need to use those fields to represent themselves accurately? The sooner we can normalize pronouns the sooner this stops becoming a big culture war issue, and the sooner we can focus on things like taxes and government spending that *actually* matter
Pronouns are a regression. We are supposed to de-emphasize our sex and race. I don't want expose my gender any more than I was my ethnicity and religion stated.
Which company?
