nice guy but my manager always wings his “mandatory meeting” just for the sake of him putting check mark on “held a team meeting” with rumbles of his personal life no one needs to know…
Agendas are a hate love relationship. They feel a bit micromanagy but help keep from awkward silences
I use them to just not forget something I wanted to talk about. So I just write down topics. If we don’t have topics, we just cancel.
“I use them to just not forget something I wanted to talk about.” *life in 30s(and later) be like* 🥲
“team meeting” with over 30 attendees, not 1-1.
See this is where learning to delegate is huge and figuring out who on the team wants to go for a leader role next... 1. You don't have to worry about organizing the agenda, but you can help by giving suggestions 2. That person will love the development opportunity and will do an amazing job and everyone wins! (I've done this lol and it works!) The only issue you might run into is if your manager is a micro manager then they should not use my strategy cuz the person you choose won't learn anything and will most likely hate having the work delegated to them.
That meeting is stupid with or without agenda.

I miss human interactions…
You can have human interactions outside of work
Oh? Tell me more please 🤔
Just be glad you’re manager is a nice guy and trying to have the team connect
I personally think it works best for you to write the agenda thru out the week, but then have the manager run thru it. If an IC is doing there job, they are usually either busy or tired whenever your 1-on-1 happens. So helping to drive the meeting as a manager, using the agenda of your IC as a guide, is probably the best way to spend the time. Great managers will even check the agenda mid week, in prep for the meeting. But that usually is only for smaller teams.
All depends on your perspective… I do 99.9% of my work outside of my 1:1s, so I use my 1:1s to shoot the shit with my boss, who I never see in person & barely get a chance to talk to. I find making small talk tends to humanize our relationship & makes my professional relationship with them that much easier to manage. 10/10 I do not feel like it’s wasted time.
As a manager, my directs dictate how 1:1s go. If they want to shoot the shit I’m down. If they want direct feedback on promo to the next level I’m down. If they want me to go crack some XFN skulls I’m super down. If they want me to solve a tough problem with them I’m super duper down.

What is driving the decline in Tech Jobs?
If it’s your 1-on-1, isn’t it better you set the agenda? After all the 1-on-1 is for you to drive the conversation and if you aren’t doing it, perhaps your are going at it wrong? Having your manager set the agenda of 1-on-1 is counterproductive and you won’t get a chance to talk.
Yes it’s pretty widely accepted that the best way to do a 1:1 is to have the report set the agenda, not the manager.
