Work culture @ Netflix

Does the company's culture of only keeping the best lead to a cut throat environment ? I've heard this happening a lot at amzn but was curious about Netflix. Do folks work with/ help each other to get stuff done ? TC : (pathetic)180k

When I was at Dell, no. Microsoft, no. SouthWest, yes.

Sorry I was asking specifically about Netflix . Should have made the question clearer

That’s helpful indeed. Microsoft seems a good place to go.

Fortunately I will never have to worry about this problem at my company

OP, edit your post to make it @Netflix only so you get more netflix people responses.

It doesn't feel cutthroat. Managers are not under any pressure to, for example, fire the bottom 10%. So you're not competing with your colleagues for your job. On the other hand, managers are encouraged to think "If I had to make the decision again, would I hire this person?" If the answer is "meh", then they should probably go ahead and let you go so that they can find someone for whom the answer is "heck yes".

To answer the second question, yes - people work together to get stuff done. Collaboration is not always perfect, but this is more a symptom of the high degree of freedom than a cutthroat environment. The people I've seen let go were either because they couldn't collaborate with others, or were just assholes. Life is too short to work with assholes.

Thanks for the reply . It's always great to get insider insight . Agree completely about the assholes part. A couple of follow-ups 1) are you always expected to deliver at a 110 percent ? For example, Do managers make accomodations for personal life events ? Say like marriage or having a child. 2)Hows the internal tooling ? Is there enough time given for an external hire to ramp up ? Or are they expected to deliver right away ?

I say no because people should only get hired at Netflix if they are top quality. There is no stack ranking like other companies so you are only competing against yourself for your job, not others. Everyone can be a rockstar and thrive. No one has to get thrown under the bus.

Thanks . I had a few follow-up questions on the other thread would be great to have your insight on those .

It’s not cutthroat at all. In fact, I feel that the people here are some of the most empathetic I’ve ever worked with. Real time feedback is an actual thing here. It’s great because it comes from a place of wanting to help your coworker grow and become even better at what they do.

Interesting . Glassdoor and other threads paint a terrible picture. Lucky you ?

Glassdoor will always paint a terrible picture because most people will only review a company they are pissed at. Unless of course there are HR initiatives to get people to write good reviews. But that’s something we’ll never do.
