I don’t have a positive impression about Apple’s overall work culture and work life balance. I am curious how does it compare to Amazon? Because I don’t hear as many people leaving Apple as people leaving Amazon. So is it better? For context this is AIML core team. Thanks.
“I don’t have a positive impression about Apple’s overall work culture and work life balance.” Says a guy who works for amazon. You remind me of a corporate monkey
Hey, people can have incorrect assumptions. The important point is, I am open to updating my assumptions. End of the day we all are corporate slaves. Save your slurs for someone else.
I know significantly more monkeys at Citibank than Amazon. The Citibank ones I know eat leftover banana peels.
Applw is top, amazon is the worst in the industry. Amazon is usually bloated with relatively high payed morons who can’t jump outside - good for getting into faang as I dis, but overall trash firm.
lol stfu, microsoft still pays less than amazon. Stay in your lane at the country club.
This is very true. The quality of engineers and managers in Amazon is very low. So they play politics to survive and backstab everyone else. @amazon guy who is badmouthing Microsoft, I haven’t worked at MS and hence cannot comment about. It. But I have worked at Amazon and what the MS guy said is 100% true. Own it and stop screwing others by making them fall into the pipazon trap.
I have the best WLB at Apple. Don’t have to deal with PIP stuff too
Been at both places. Amazon is way way way worse than Apple. In Apple, your team members will help you, care about Apple products and users. In Amazon, your team members will be looking to backstab you at every possibility so that you get pipped and not them.
Wlb isn’t the best, and no perks. But refreshers are really nice, making working hard motivating. Also good team mates in general, since there are no bs quotas people actually care about their orgs and products. Espp is a good perk as well. Holiday shutdowns mean lighter workload in November and December.
Thanks a lot for the information. Do you typically work on weekends or outside 9-5? How frequently? Is working outside business hours the norm rather than an exception?
No weekends so far. In services. I do work 50 hours per week (honest work with minimal distractions) so would say teams are lean and do need hard work. I have been pretty happy with my refreshers so far, and products that actually get launched. Leadership is top down but don’t seem to be attention deficit just jumping randomly from one thing to other based on others. Projects seem to be well thought out and they seem committed for long term investments. I have seldom heard or seen canned projects at least in services.
Do you have good WLB at Amazon? Then don't go to Apple. It's completely team dependent. You can easily end up at a toxic team working 80 hours a week. WLB is ALWAYS team dependent. I work 35 hour weeks at Amazon. Maybe working hard for 20 of that. I have good relationships with coworkers and thus politics + perceptions of merit keeps me off PIP. To me Apple looks toxic as fuck and I'm not passionate about the products to work hard for them. Much rather work hard at an org like Kuiper.
I had heard that Kuiper is crazy with politics. But you are spot on that politics is org / team dependent. I am on PiP as a manager on an org been for 4 years. First 3 yrs were awesome and dynamics changed in last year. Crazy politics suddenly and I found myself on PiP because I didn’t play the game right. Lesson learnt. I am a smarter person now. Amazon teaches so much in life!
Yep I know I'm not secure in my job long term but WLB wise I'm chilling. I know I can easily be PIP if things change drastically but that doesn't bother me. I've already been here over 4 years. I've actually been legitimately disappointed at not being laid off as it would give me an excuse to leave Seattle with severance. Job security and WLB are 2 different things.

Tech companies to avoid as a white guy?
Do you have an offer ?
I’m sure OP is worried about culture before passing a single round, Rajesh style 🙄
So you think worrying about WLB after you have gone through all the hard work is a better idea? Especially when you have a well paid job.
