SSD firmware guy in Bay Area here with about 10+ year under my belt. Recently discovered blind and was shocked that so many people with much less experience are making so much more at FANG. Currently making about 160k base and a TC of about 190k, all cash. Thinking about trying out in AWS, Azure, FB or GCS. Anyone on the storage side offering suggestions? Main skill in embedded and storage, old school stuff, can learn python quick but haven't done Java or any newer stuff. Good understanding of parallelism and multi core, bare metal or RTOS, flash memory and hard drive, firmware and device driver.
What is your goal?
This is the right question to ask .
OP said it. $$
There’s a server platforms hardware/systems team at google.
What is the skillset you look for to join this team at Google?
Prob hardware people (Qualcomm, Broadcom, Intel, etc), kernel and networking engineers
I am also in a similar boat as the OP. I am also experienced in embedded systems and Linux kernel. But nobody seems to offer TCs in embedded systems anywhere close to what the young guys at FANG are making. Feels like I went to sleep and after I woke up, the whole world has changed 😀. Better late than never though ! Any suggestions on how to market myself in a better way ? I know enough theory about cloud and distributed systems, but haven't contributed to any large scale distributed system like AWS. Azure etc.
Join a storage or any other startup or good big companies that pays well.. don't hang around in middle..
Probably not helpful, but I’ve enjoyed EC2 a lot under AWS.
I can recommend a role for AWS that is storage related
Work on cloud storage. Distributed storage.
Elastic Block Storage team under AWS.
Google is promising one.
Pure Storage!
Your revenue says otherwise, still not profitable, eh?
Already missed the boat on IPO. Unless you get a lot of RSU and discount the vest price it will not be good.
