Is 2.5M enough to retire in Bay Area?
Hey guys! I got two offers this summer in software engineering, wanted to get your thoughts on them. Thanks! —————————————————————————— BlackRock, Software Engineer (Aladdin Team): San Francisco, CA Pros: • $56/hr • 4 day RTO (good for learning experience) • Good on a cv incase I want to get into quant Cons: • No relocation assistance, Downtown SF is insane • BlackRock isnt known for SWE, 🦖🦕 tech stack • irl LexCorp/Arasaka • NG offers are very low, $109K + $10k signon —————————————————————————- Workday, Software Application Engineer (Accounting & transaction processing) Pleasanton, CA Pros: • $50/hr • $7000 housing stipend • Good WLB and culture Cons: • Proprietary ‘Xpresso’ language. Apparently there’s no coding at all involved. No debuggers, compilers, databases, or data structures. it’s all an OO drag-and-drop web UI language using UML diagrams. • Hated by anyone who’s ever touched a job application —————————————————————————— I don’t know if Im hating on it too much, but the proprietary language comes off as a huge red flag. Sounds like it’s glorified Scratch clone. But I think I would like the culture there. Appreciate hearing your thoughts and $0.02! #engineering #software #swe #blackrock #workday #softwareengineer
Blackock
One could also say BlackRock is politically controversial. They use other peoples retirement money to do activism
proprietary language should be an instant no, completely non transferable skill workday SWE on a resume isn’t gonna get you anywhere blackrock SWE won’t either
Thats what I thought, thanks for your input. Why do you think neither of them would open any doors?
I meant I think they’d both open similar doors, not that they’re roads to nowhere. I think you’re probably under selling Black Rock on a resume.
Workday has a great culture and wlb. We have supportive managers and senior devs that want you to be successful. If that's the most important thing to you right now, it's a great choice. If you're more interested in the grind and adding new skills to the resume, then workday probably isn't for you. Xpresso isn't anything like scratch. It really is an OOP language, but it doesn't matter. The core problem with it is that it's proprietary. As a new dev you'll learn a ton about OOP and design, but the language itself won't be useful anywhere else.
If it was a normal SDE internship I’d say workday 100% but blackrock also sucks so idk. Up to you
Nah, software application engineer sounds sus. Blackrock it is.
Yeah you don’t even code in that role. Fuck that. OP go with Blackrock if you want to actually learn something.
The role is sus. Don’t do it. XO will make you stupid
