What are the differences between Airbnb and uber in working as a software engineer? Culture, etc.
I switched from Airbnb to uber. And yes, selection bias. They're not that different. Airbnb thinks they're better people but that seems to just be because of the media coverage of uber. Airbnb also tries really hard to be nice, but it's fake. While at airbnb, it was assumed that it was bro-less and uber was all bros. after switching I find it kinda opposite but uber is also a lot bigger. I definitely find that the technical challenges at uber are way more interesting. Traffic volume, scaling, problems being solved.
I joined Uber after a year at Airbnb. The technical challenges at Airbnb are really lacking. The scale is nothing great and the service is not technically challenging. Most of the highly technical engineers have left to Google, FB, Uber, or their own startups. It is a great company if you want to focus on building simple products with great UI/UX but besides that, it's boring. Its also not an engineering driven culture.
only those that have worked at both can answer this question accurately, and even then theres confirmation bias towards their later company. might wanna try browsing the forum a bit, similar posts come up quite often!
