You don't need a long list of degrees, you don't need to go to a top school, you don't need to slog your butt off like lawyers, investment bankers or doctors. But you can rival them in TC. What do you guys think? TC: 257k #tech
Computer science is the great equalizer when it comes to socioeconomic status 👌 Barrier to entry is much lower than other high paying careers. Sure it's not going to be a walk in the park to get up there but it's absolutely doable for anyone who's willing to put in the work.
It is not that easy. I know people that tried CS and failed, meanwhile they are successful lawyers. Being good at engineering is a skill that only a small amount of the population can achieve intellectually. Maybe 8-10% max. Which means that 90% of the population can’t become good engineers if they tried. (I am not talking about building simple web pages, but true engineering).
Hmm not sure where these figures are coming from, I'd push back on those. However, I can concede that some people just aren't as STEM-oriented and that's fair. I'm also just coming at this from the perspective of "getting a SWE job that pays decently" not necessarily the quality of their work
Those who disagree need to do better, get better, up skill until they can come back and vote they are living the dream too.
wut? I disagreed because tech is not fun. Techies are not fun. Look at their style, sense of humor and overall attitude toward life which sucks big way. I live in the Bay area where people don't even bother to smile back at you, everyone is carrying a bag full of misseries! Ugh I hate my life here.
Key part: I hate my life here…. Sounds like you need to do better, get better, up skill until you can come back and say I love my life here.
Rival doctors and lawyers - nope!
Lol, what. Of course it does. I'm guessing you're non tech role? Also tech has the massive advantage of starting right out college which saves 2 years JD or 3 MD and 200-300k debt. That's easily a 600k head start.
Maybe when they are starting out, but SWE TCs plateau pretty fast. Doctors and lawyers TCs can go to millions
People in Tech are one of the crappiest people to be around though. So there’s that.
Gimme a break. Lawyers are aholes and doctors are super entitled. Techies are way friendlier.
Lawyers and doctors are assholes to your face. People in Tech are way sneakier. Also, People in Tech are way less informed and smart about society/politics/culture than they think and any non-tech convo is either a dud or super-infuriating.
Yeah that's fair
2.0 GPA in college I barely graduated with a useless degree because I was an idiot. Still am, but I was too.

It is a lot of work. Don’t diminish the amount of work it takes do get to the 400k tc crowd. Most tech people make something like 180k.
Compare it to most other ways of achieving that type of TC and it’s a fucking cakewalk
Agree with Amazon, high paying SWE jobs are not nearly as grueling to obtain as the other professions mentioned in the post. The comparable TC just shows we know how to get to the same point more efficiently though 😉
