Work/life at FB

For the 5th time this year a Facebook parent from my kids class, left a party/class event midway to attend to a work. Today, the kid was inconsolable when he realized dad had stepped out. It upset the whole event. Is this usual at FB or am I dealing with a biased sample set? Is it worth putting your family through this unpredictable life? Amazon has a bad work life balance rep compared to FB but seems my life is a cake walk compared to these families, even though I am on a legacy tier-1 service team.

Feel sad reading this. I am not the guy, but I totally could be. This company is miserable in terms of people management

Four months into the school year and you’ve already had five middle-of-the-day class parties for parents to attend? I do feel bad for the guy and his kid, but also sounds like the school is not particularly accommodating to working parents.

Exactly what I was thinking. Who the hell has the kind of job where you can just take off a day a month, on top of all the other days normal life requires (doctor visits, sick days, vacation)? In fact, this makes me kind of angry because it means only two-parent families with extremely flexible jobs can fully participate.

Could the op mean 2018 whole?

So this is the thing at Facebook. You manage your own Work Life Balance. But the leaders (managers, directors and VPs) sometimes set bad examples - so there is fear that you got to live up to that. Managers, Directors and VPs will tell you to take the time when needed, but to make it easily absorbed, they need to first live that. This is a culture which has been stemmed from leadership.

You are asking if one out of tens of thousands is a bad sample set? :)

Yes they kind of do! They discuss stupid metrics like this in calibrations! Supposedly in the name of being fair to everyone. I was shocked when I first realized this, but I guess I accepted the system eventually.
