I am a Software Developer at Virsec Systems India with 1.5 YOE and 0.5 can be excluded as it was a gap. And this story is about that gap. I was a software developer at Arista Networks per corona. I received a offer letter from Goldman sachs which was better than my compensation at that time. But within a week I also got an offer from WorksApplications Singapore which was a way better offer in terms of compensation. So I declined Goldman Sachs and accepted WorksApplications offer. My PR took longer than usual, almost 3 months to be confirmed (initial bad luck). Then I resigned and after a month I came home to pack up for singapore with a week on my hand but within that week Covid picked up the pace and lockdowns were in effect and travles were banned. I was left with no job. I was told to wait till the situation is better. I waited for like 3 months and then the special flights started to operate. I was told the firm has to take a pre entry approval for me from Singapore government in order to board those special flights. But the pre approval got rejected. Finally I was hopeless and I started applying back here in my home town at India. Goldman Sachs told me their offer was no longer good and they didn't have a opening at that moment. I got an offer from Virsec Systems India which was below Goldman Sachs or WorksApplications in terms of compensation. But I had no choice. Now I have a gap of 6 months on my resume. I cannot switch easily as I have just joined in July 2020. So tell me guys what could have I done better or different? What should my approach be in future? #tech #softwareengineer #singapore #indiasalary #arista #virsec #worksapplications #goldmansachs
Arista is hiring. In case you want to come back.
Would you like to refer me, to this company. Thanks ? 5 yoe
Brazen it out i say. Be unapologetic and just say truthfully that a foreign govt rejected your entry due to this situation. Wherever you apply, always mention the reason ("foreigner entry rejected"). There is nothing you did wrong and there is nothing you could have done better.
If you had Singaporean work authorization, then why couldn't the company start your employment remotely for initial few months until you could finally travel or perhaps put you on fully/partially paid leave or something? I don't know about the company, whether they could've afforded that, but top tech companies certainly did that (Facebook put people on paid leave, Google/Amazon gave temporary offers for India location until people could actually travel). I am guessing that the company couldn't have afforded putting you on paid leave and doesn't have an office in India, which is why it didn't work out. Is that right?
It is more likely that they didnt have a WFH system in place. Or had problems setting that up internationally. I switched to Arista during lockdown, they shipped a laptop to my place.

Is "From the River to the Sea" So Wrong?
You were a victim of unfortunate circumstances. There's nothing much which you can do other than look forward to the future. I personally feel it's too bad that so many recruiters in India nitpick candidates on bullshit criteria like gap years in resumes instead of just focusing on whether candidates have what it takes to do the job. In any case, you have a story and empathetic recruiters would understand. If they don't, you wouldn't wanna work there.
I never felt like sharing this story until today. But now I am glad I did.
You got great offers which means you are talented. You will probably get offers like these in the future too. In future when you look at this time, you will feel how unfortunate you were and how bravely you withstood this tough period.
