I recently got an Amazon offer for SDE 1 (I’m a new grad), but I’m hesitant to take it since I’ve really enjoyed my few months with Comcast as an Eng1. I’m 95% confident I’ll be at Eng3 level with Comcast in two years, which gives TC of ~130k. The wlb is also excellent, and I average 35hrs/wk at most. I feel like I’ve already proven I can be an engineer at my current company, but I’m willing to work longer hours/higher stress for better opportunities in the future. I’m curious to hear if it’s worth the risk of PIP/higher stress/toxic culture. I also wonder how much better Amazon looks on the resume vs Comcast. Current TC: 99k (92k base, 2k stock, 5k bonus) Amazon TC: ~150k (120k base, 88k RSU 4yrs, 50k 2yr signing)
What location for Amazon? Seems low
Seattle
For new grad - L4 TC is normal for Seattle.
An alternative way to look at this: You’re making ~100k now vs ~150k at Amazon. Are you willing to pay Comcast $50k a year for a sense of comfort? Only you can really answer that for yourself.
I moved from Amazon from an AverageCo place before 100% worth it. Just works wonders for your career and you really don’t learn much from meme companies tbh
Did you go from Amazon to average co or the other way around?
AverageCo -> Amazon -> debating FB or Twitter rn (offers at both)
Philly is a nice place. Work for a couple of years and bail?
Sde1 base @ amz is just 120$ for Seattle? Because lot of my classmates join other non faang tech companies with almost same base. Op don't want to demotivate you...you should definitely consider this deal...get the money and amz on resume...have exit strategy ready...jump the ship again with larger tc... How I will look at this...you want to move another ship from comcast in 2 years and they'll offer X% raise. Same if you would do from amazon, you will be making 1.4-1.6 x X% raise... Rest your call.
You are young and can take risks. Moreover, the risk is very low in this case.
Yes
This is the time of your life to work at Amazon. You are young, can handle more work and learn. Don't lose your interview practice and move out after 2 years.
It’s never worth it to move to amazon
Having only comcast on your resume is going to become a problem in obtaining interviews at decent places. Amazon is not a nice place to work in, but it gives you a resume boost.
