Would I be crazy to accept a 2 steps lower title?

Background: I've been working at Thomson Reuters my whole career, 10 years. Currently a lead software engineer. Think it's finally time to move on and find something else. $130k + 10% bonus with a really good work life balance. I interviewed at Atlassian and Capital One. At Capital One I got an offer for a lead software engineer. 175k + 12k target bonus. At Atlassian, I interviewed for a senior software engineer role. This was my first interview in 10 years so I wasn't super well prepared so didn't do as good. I have an unofficial offer if I'm fine down leveling to a software engineer. Base 155k but total comp would be around 210-215k. Which offer seems better? On paper it sounds great to be paid more overall TC with less responsibility and then still have a bunch of room to grow. But don't know if the drop down to software engineer will look bad. Any thoughts?

TC > title

Take capital one offer, then prepare well for next one

Why do you assume you need to keep the same title on your resume as what your past employers gave you? Take the higher TC

It could turn up in the background check right? Maybe not with the current employer.

By that point you will have already signed an offer. Which means you’ve demonstrated you’re qualified for the job you’re interviewing for. Nobody’s gonna care what your title was, much less rescind an offer because of that.

you experienced it first hand TC > Title, if you think you can perform in interview better for better TC, then keep interviewing, otherwise TC trumps all

Money and the work you do matters. Atlassian on your resume will help you to 2x your tc for your next gig may be at a faang. No one cares about the title anymore. If you care about the title then keep interviewing.

No one can decide but you. You’ll be promoted to senior in a year if you are operating at lead or senior level right now. Not gonna lie, less responsibility and good WLB sounds nice, especially since you’re upping your TC by a lot. But if you wanna chase TC, pass on atlassian and keep interviewing.

That definitely crossed my mind. The less responsibility seems nice for a bit as I'm getting a bit burnt out in my current position

Congrats on moving after 10 years!! Just did the exact same thing and don’t regret it at all! ☺️

Whatever you do negotiate for a higher TC to unlock an additional 15-20%. Then take both and see which one you like better.
