Proposition: there should be a federal property tax that will be bracketed based on square footage & maybe cost. This would encourage dense housing and also tax the rich who own multi-million dollar homes. Tc 200k
Giving more money to any government is never a good idea
Housing costs are so huge that there needs to be a financial penalty for owning too much to yourself
And you think adding a tax is going to decrease the cost of owning somehow? You need to think further. Housing prices increase due to your tax, people in these positions will raise prices to make up for it, gets passed to consumer, now no change to owner and consumer is more poor, and you just created more inflation. Be more thoughtful of the consequences of each action
Proposition: we should tax OPs mom as punishment for spawning OP
If you want to redistribute wealth and trust the federal government to help do it, then yes. If you don’t want to redistribute wealth or you don’t trust the federal government, then no.
If you trust the federal government, please reach out to me. I want to do business with you.
Remove income tax. Add property tax?
Remove income tax for those earning under 50k and then add property tax?
Replacing income tax with Land Value Tax is a great idea. It's called Georgism and was extremely popular around a century ago.
Stop trying to tax everything. You’re just asking for corruption
you would just increase tax on all homeowners. the logic of county tax is it benefits the local area where the house is. not sure what the logic of a federal one would be other than just raising tax revenue overall. but you are saying it wouldnt be based on property value, just size and replacement cost..?
Breathing tax, how about a tax by weight, you personally take up more space the more you weigh. More taxing on the environment too. Every piece of cake has more tax and goes to reducing the price of vegetables
I’d actually agree to both of those on an airplane
New proposition: non-citizens are forbidden to own homes.
Encouraging immigration is good for the economy, so I don’t think this would help anyone. We need hard working immigrants to want to come here.
And once they become naturalized, they can own a home.
Yes fuck Prop 13. Even better would be replace our stupid income tax with property taxes. Working helps people and our economy. Fencing off a plot of land for yourself only gets in the way.
Individual freedom gets in the way of community progress? Probably, but not everyone wants to partake in all aspects of society or progress. Also, doesn’t this tax really just cause those on a fixed income to become homeless? If you locked in your house payment 30 years ago, retired and are living on your own and taxes keep shooting up, you end up unable to afford your home anymore… but I guess since you’ve outlived your usefulness (since you don’t produce anything to receive an income), who cares about you?
Yes when you fence off a piece of land you do in fact get in other people's way. I'd say 40% of my commute is just getting around people's yards. > Also, doesn’t this tax really just cause those on a fixed income to become homeless? No. Taxing land, instead of labor, is the most surefire way we know of to eliminate poverty. If you're concerned about poor old grandma it's very simple to carve out exceptions. California already does this with the California Tax Postponement Program (but if course nobody bothers because they have Prop 13 and only pay pennies). Do you honestly think that our current setup is working so great?

How did this happen? (Meta Stock)
Let's propose that States can either get in on it, or vote to secede from union
Excellent idea tbh
