Absolutely not. As if their search wasn’t already terrible. Plus the woke dumpster that Gemini AI was, I can only imagine how combining both is going to look like.

The generative AI on search thing is insane. You do a Google search and then it’s sitting there loading? This is exactly why we switched to Google from Yahoo 20 years ago.

Pay for the terrible product by dying company? Google lost AI revolution and can’t offer anything non-ridiculous

Every cultural shift produces a counterculture which is a group of people who disagree with the direction of the popular cultural shift. Google should try to capitalize on the counterculture to the LLM hype by offering more genuine and authoritative answers. You can't beat LLMs by making a slightly better LLM. You can beat them by having authentic and accurate search that is so good that you won't even think about going to LLMs. I want a Google Search that is like Google Flights - I should be able to filter on multiple dimensions, sort the results by different algorithms, filter websites or types of websites, have "live search" (per keypress refresh), so many other things. This is the area that Google could've innovated in but didn't because there was no competitive pressure.

And fast! LLMs are extremely slow.

Today chatgpt 4 searches is better than pure google. Google can’t offer free LLM search, because they will lose ads money. Their initiative with paid LLM search is logical replacement for ads revenue. Nobody cares here about the quality

Their search results are already sh**t, unless you ask some well-known subject matter. Why would I pay premium? Not to mention the half page of sponsored links.

I pay for Kagi. Best search engine I have used.

Amazon obscurous OP Apr 4

What's the search quality like?

Amazon undrleveld Apr 4

Best search engine I have used. It’s easily worth the money. No ads. Instant. No seo garbage. First result is almost always the most relevant one. Search on Hackernews for comments on Kagi. The fact that so many people go out of their way to recommend it says a lot.

No, but I would pay for their search product of 10 years ago, without the fucking videos and 10 pages of shopping ads.
