Same level, work seems equally meaningful. Google has better perks but they're worth far less than the difference in comp (140k more at Tesla). WLB at Google is great, partly because I get away with being in the office 6h/day while signaling work over weekends. Tesla has a reputation of terrible WLB, but maybe I'll be able to pull sth similar off. Career wise deployments in research are really slow so my promo to T6 is probably 2-3 yrs away. Tesla acknowledged I would be at the top of the Senior range and claims to promote many such hires in the AP team within the first year. Said by Google recruiter this would be bullshit, but at Tesla it seems to be managers decision to promote, no committees, so maybe more plausible? Even if a lie, it still maybe worth it though. Tesla is having some trouble recently but getting the initial stock grant at depressed levels may be actually beneficial. AP obv has a lot of hype around it, but also seems to be gathering an order of magnitude more data than competitors (and Waymo didn't want me). Which would you choose?
You said promotion in 2-3 years but will Tesla be around in 2-3 years?
Tesla manager and recruiter claim it would happen in the first year, given that at some point they even considered giving me the Staff level. May be a lie though, but at Google there is no way it would happen so fast.
just ask for a staff level position.TSLA staff level should be mapping to Google's senior level.
Google brain for me is a learning opportunity. Do some research there, learn from the best , the. be best in the field. Auto pilot is more an application of what Google brain teaches. If you think you have learned a lot from the opportunity, I think it’s a good time to put it to use.
Why not make more money for doing the same thing? Tesla WLB should be worse so this is a personal tradeoff you have to make.
Share numbers this is blind
Google 340k TC/yr, Tesla 480k TC/yr. Only included stocks that would vest in my first year obv. Can't give more details/breakdown as it would identify me. Also didn't wanna derail the discussion, have people call it bullshit etc.
With no 401K matching/ missing perks like free food, lunch/dinner and no annual bonus. Both are almost similar offers in terms of your annual savings.
I wouldn’t do it. Autopilot is a garbage fire compared to Brain. It’s not going to be enough for full autonomy.
I agree cameras are insufficient. But what if the master plan is to let others bring the cost of LIDAR down, while mastering cameras (by leveraging data gathered by already deployed cars) and only then achieve full autonomy? This is how I read it even if Musk says otherwise...
Don't plan the fate of your career around what if...
Dude 6hrs a day at Tesla and you want to get promoted to staff in 1 year. Come on. I would stay at google brain. If you join tesla forget WLB. I am serious, don't listen to what managers and recruiters at Tesla say. That is a lie to get you to sing the offer. Good luck.
Agreed that for promo I would probably need to put more effort in either company. But assuming I stay at my lvl, and do great work, display some leadership etc. but be in the office just 10-17 + respond to emails in the evenings, monitor my jobs over weekends etc. what would happen? Is it just peer pressure that would go against me? Wil my manager explicitly pressure me to work more? Set me an aggressive deadline? Give me poor ratings? Fire me? Do you know if this is specificaly true in AP team too? If so how come all these Google and Apple engineers go there and agree to this?
First off not all google Apple engineers go here. I have seen 3-4 in ap team I have worked with. Most of them are in Staff positions. I have also seen Apple/G engineers come here and leave within a year. One of the common reasons are the culture,WLB level or quality of infrastructure/code compared to A/G. It's not about asking you to work over weekends. It's your co workers etc who are willing to work over the weekend and all day everyday. Then you have to work extra hours to get the same amount of work done for your manager to promote/give you a raise compared to others. Idk which team you in AP you are joining but this is my observation. As to firing or getting laid off that's common in AP because of expectations and the constant change in direction since Elon is more hands on.
Brain’s brand carries a lot of weight outside of alphabet. You can definitely do better, possibly with a level bump. Don’t take Tesla offer and interview at better places.
What are better places? Fb pays well but it's harder to find a meaningful project. Uber pays well and has meaningful projects but is known for a toxic culture. Lyft has meaningful work, good culture and money but lower chance of making it to profitability...
With your brain credentials you can pretty much pick your team in Facebook. You can definitely find something meaningful. 6-8 hours will not cut it, but WLB and comp can be much better than Tesla.
Interview at Facebook and Netflix ASAP before accepting
If I am happy working at Google Brian with the best researchers/engineers, I won’t even think of Tesla (even if the pay me million dollars). I had an ex colleague who was at Tesla autopilot for a short while and heard just horrendous stories at Tesla.
What kind of horror stories? Genuinely curious.
