Wtf is wrong with Google?

I just read this on reddit and am pretty dumbfounded. This person has done 1 STEP and 2 SWE internships at Google but for some strange reason needs to go through a LC style interview process to see if they get a full-time offer. I mean seriously, isn't the fact that they have worked three internships at the company a better indicator of their ability to perform then some stupid Algo and DS interviews where the content is never used on the job anyway?

For better or worse, Google perf system is very soft on low performers managers can let people slide almost forever. And it can be even worse for internships. They want a uniform standard so transfers are easy. The loss of local control is the price.

Not surprising, some companies will reinterview interns. Sometimes it be like that.

Salesforce nooglr2020 Sep 30, 2020

Everyone goes through interview process. period. Your internship performance is taken into account. Hence only 2 rounds. I'd imagine Google isn't the only company that does it. If this is a problem, Google isn't the company for you. Cuz L3 interviews are really easy. "You get a interview... You get an interview. You get an interview. ." - oprah style

Name one other company that does this

Salesforce nooglr2020 Sep 30, 2020

^ wait doesn't fb do that?

I thought it’s better to have an interview instead of rejection right away if you had a shitty manager during the intern period.

Microsoft Ras-Putin Sep 30, 2020

At MSFT we extend offer at the end of an internship, at which point we have a pretty clear view of how they’ll perform. That has worked pretty well, although it’s very lopsided toward extending return offers to the vast majority of interns. (Although they did survive an interview round to get there so not too surprising.) G’s process seems like it offers more chances for bias to creep in, since interviews are way more subjective than actual work.

Google (•̀⌄•́) Sep 30, 2020

Yet msft will reinterview you if you switch teams

Microsoft Ras-Putin Sep 30, 2020

Yes that is true.

competent people easily pass those interviews. its not difficult for them. the fact that the person is complaining says a lot of things

Nuro ItgK31 Sep 30, 2020

The interviews are just normal SWE interview rounds.. not sure what you mean by competent people easily passing them, there’s plenty of people that fail.

Google __human__ Sep 30, 2020

The interviews have a high false negative rate by design, as we would rather miss a bunch of good hires than make a bad hire. Plenty of competent people get filtered out. If you're good and spread risk across multiple companies, you should get a reasonable percentage though.

Lmao your a clown. I wish I had done 3 internships at Google. Also, do you not know how blind works where we can see what company the person posting works at?

Instacart wype Sep 30, 2020

The fact they're complaining shows they probably don't deserve to be there

Google?, nah man, whining is pretty fucking Googly.

What an entitled douche. Xer already got into google due to a diversity program, and xer wants more?! Seriously how greedy can people be...

Citibank hhvbbv OP Sep 30, 2020

Wth are you talking about? Just because they were initially hired through a diversity program, they should be treated more strictly for a full-time offer? If so, what even is the point of having the diversity program?

Facebook derkilum Sep 30, 2020

I think they were just saying there has to be a point at which there are no more free passes, and the standard is the same bar. That said, I think modern LC style interviews are a terrible measure of how good an engineer is, so largely sympathize with the original poster. I think FB works its interns hard, and hires without interviews based on intern performance. When I was an intern host and an observer of hosts at Google, some of the interns were quite lazy and entitled.
