A recruiter from JPMC reached out to me to apply as VP. I told him I have 13 YOE + PhD in ML and want to pursue an ED position, but he still believes VP is the right title to apply to, saying some VPs have 20 YOE. Could he be right by any means? Edit: I was 64 at Microsoft (laid off)
VP is basically senior swe/data scientist, its a huge step down
Is it a step down from 64 @ Microsoft?
You should be ED based on your experience and qualifications. The promotion from VP to ED is very challenging and political. It is better to get in as an ED.
Depends what’s your current scope, level is.
I was 64 at Microsoft, what do you think?
TBH, 64 to VP seems ok to me. You should check team size & scope.
EDs are typically management roles. Rarely have I seen an IC ED. So, if you are planning to be an IC, VP is your best bet. Wanna lead a team and bunch of extra responsibilities along the way, shoot for ED
Thnx, but people say VPs cannot be more than Senior SWE whrn moving to big tech. Also, as a VP, I will be equal to some folks who graduated 5 years ago, isn't it?
May be not 5 years..but 8-10 possibly. With your experience, you can look for a better pay scale than them. If it helps, I am a VP and I have 15 yoe. My role is more like a TL and I am hoping to get promoted to ED in the next year or two. Like many others said here, VP to ED is a tough jump. If you are willing to take up some management, don’t stop yourself from asking for ED; not otherwise
VP in banking is Sr Manager (ideal for IC) ED is looking for people leaders / managers You want ED pay but you'll enjoy VP work If they wont take the chance on you for ED because of your background and experience, then decline the opportunity and keep looking (especially if you have a 12 month emergency fund and aren't stressed about finding a job immediately), otherwise, take VP and exit in a year or two
I was a VP. Massive step down. ED or MD depending on how JO Morgan designates the title. If you don’t come in at that level, you’ll regret it. Progression is hard.
So did you join Meta directly from VP? If so, what was your Meta level?
First attend the interview, clear and prove for ED, just you are in msft some level does not make you eligible. In jPmc some vp have far more skills than you and in vp level for years
To play devils advocate, there’s a VP on my current team who is unable to write an if statement in Python. @OP don’t take VP
Erectile dysfunction?
Why don’t you just apply, interview, make sure the team absolutely loves you, and if and when you get the offer, you negotiate the ED title? Seems like the best way since you have no leverage before applying.
You can't negotiate ED after getting an offer. It's like starting over. ED requires higher level interviewers from the beginning.

Yes, a lot of VPs are lifers. You’re right to ask for ED, stick to your guns Get that title and pay, promotion process for ED is super political and you will regret taking VP
What’s the pay difference?
ED preferred
