Hey Blind fam, help me pick a choice for my next steps in life. Excuse the long post as this is a MAJOR life decision. I turned 29 recently and got kind of depressed that I have nothing to show for my 20s. The years went by faster than I’d like, and honestly feel it was wasted. Corporate is a cold world, and has negatively affected me as a person. On top of that, I’ve been out on PIP and not planning to stay at company. I’ve never been good at corporate and was laid off twice before (company reduction) which is still related to performance (since I was part of the first wave)… though coworkers who worked extremely hard also got laid off, so I escaped unnecessary stress. I have a side hustle I’ve been doing that has led to much more self development than any of my jobs gave me. I have two choices: A) Use my savings and take half a year off (at most a year) and put all my eggs in one basket and try to build good side hustle into a solid income stream. That way, I know how to be self sufficient and can fall back on this if something happens. If it does well, this would be another career path where I get to control. Instinctively, I think this is most suited for me because I’m a creative- not a highly analytical / systems thinker which is what suits tech. I’ve realized fulfillment for me is not solving problems, but creating tangible things. Recently I did a beta test product and made about $3k (related with bad economy) which is tiny, but I was so energized by the whole process and know if I actively promote the product, I can make at least a few thousand a month. The con is not having a manager, no structure, frankly I’m afraid of not being able to execute. B) I find another job in this crappy market and try to balance the side hustle with job. Obviously stability is nice, and takes the stress off of having to make it. Con is I’ve done this twice and my side hustle always suffered. This time I was thinking of trying to find some kind of low pay low expectations remote job, get underpaid by $80-120k. Not sure how easy to find that though. The fact I’m 29 keeps looming over me, because I could’ve achieved so much more in my 20s, and this year feels like a pivotal choice. What should I do? NO DEBT, KIDS, PARTNER, ONLY A DOG TC: 220k but think even 80k sounds amazing if it is self generated income
If you can afford it for a while, give it a shot. You can always go back later when the job market gets better.
My thoughts exactly, thank you
One thing that can keep you sane is having a schedule. Be it part time chill low wage work somewhere at the same time two three shifts a week or a hobby that you do every Monday and Thursday evening. Definitely read more from people that made the switch. I didn't do it yet. Hopefully one day!
We get one shot at this life. If you’ve found something you love and know you hate your current life, fuck the money. Be free.
Thank you😭 I really needed to hear that
Can you robs 401k to fund your startup? It says that robs is tax free and penalty free to rollover 401k to business start up.
No need, not a startup needing investment
Get a remote low stress job, maybe part time even, do both until the side hustle generates comparable income to the job. Only then quit it
Part time sounds awesome and would be contract work though tbh not sure if ux design a part time thing
You should only quit your job once you start making money from it
you will never have fewer responsibilities than you have now. Use the time well. Good luck.
Yolo that sounds amazing. Only issue is more about working alone than money

How unfeasible is pouring consistent efforts in both? I have a lot of colleagues that have side hustles that generate six figures but they also keep their day job because it's their main money source. They can definitely leave and survive purely off their hustle, but the amount of effort you can pour more by doing this isn't as high as you think
That’s incredible they can do that but I’m realizing to build this up, I don’t think I personally can (without taking much longer or never at all)
