Yahoo was offered 1M and later 1B to buy Google Yahoo was offered 4B to buy out Netflix Yahoo was offered 1.3B to buy Hulu Yahoo offered 1B to buy out Facebook but didnt go through because they did not want to pay more Holy https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ex-yahoo-ceo-marissa-mayer-175125926.html How can people be so blinded
She sucked
She wasn’t there in yahoo. Yes she sucks a lot but that’s not related to tech
These companies will fail after the buyout though when yahoo starts packing the house with 3 layers of vps to lead 10 engineers.
Yeap exactly Yahoo ran lot of companies to the ground. They ruined Tumblr,Overture,Geocities,Right media etc. Some of those companies could have done much better being independent.
Add Flickr to the list. Flickr was a leader in photo sharing. It had its own social network of sorts and it was alive and thriving, but Yahoo managed to kill that too.
All these are click bait headlines and hindsight insights. Companies like Netflix Google etc became big because the decisions they took (amongst other circumstances/situations of Market etc. ) Being merged in Yahoo may or may not have allowed them to take those decisions. And hence we cannot say if something good could have come out of those acquisition. Whose to say Tumblr would not have been a 10 billion $ company (or got sold off at that price) had they not been independent for few more years ?.
You’re 100% right. Yahoo had a lot of failed products or acquisitions. Yahoo music could have been Spotify. Yahoo search could have been Google. Yahoo news could have been so many things. Yahoo video could have been Hulu or Netflix. Yahoo invested in Java and Hadoop, could have been Cloudera or the next thing. Yahoo shopping could have been Shopify. Yahoo mail could have been gmail. Geocities could have been squarespace or wix. Tumblr could have been the next Instagram or TikTok. The truth is the problem is not that Yahoo didn’t have brilliant engineers (they did, many went to become greats at other places) or even great ideas. They had terrible product design, execution, and revenue models. Their execs didn’t have the leadership skills to make these things successful. The truth is most of the things we have now, Yahoo had a basic version, or may have even been #1 in the market (eg search for a long time) but didn’t invest or believe in it, and lost it. A tale as old as time.
When something becomes big it becomes useless because of bad apples and decisions. Yahoo became that by missing out on that either by doing it themselves or acquiring new technologies. Google is going through that phase , ex open AI Eventually what goes up , goes down
She was never a good CEO. Even if they acquired those companies they wouldn’t have been what they are now. And by the time she left Yahoo was ready to be cremated. https://www.newyorker.com/business/currency/yahoos-dynamic-ceo-boring-plan
Yahoo was dead before Marissa showed up. She turned it around a little and did a good job in making the company sellable, but the mistake she made is she didn’t clean house like Steve Jobs.
It was before Marissa’s entry that Yahoo invested in Alibaba and was making money out of that investment. Once Alibaba became public, they had to come out of that investment and revenues dropped. She made useless acquisitions during her tenure and burned cash. Refer to the article I share for more info. Even during her tenure at google only after she left google search really shaped up and sort of created an ecosystem after her departure. She could have been a good engineer but definitely not a good leader.
The skills that get you to the top, do not help you operate at the top. Climbing the ladder and actually running a company is a totally different skillset.
Knowing Yahoo they would have fucked up Netflix after acquiring
Mayer is worth an estimated $600M. I don’t think she cares how badly she f*cked up at Yahoo.
I don't think ironically that's the case. People at these levels do it for more than the money, even if it means a f*ck up over and over. Otherwise she would have bailed out at 60 mil or even less.
Yeah, and how many companies did they have a chance to buy that ended up flopping? Imagine if they had bought those. Hindsight is 20/20
And also you could have been a billionaire by going all-in on TSLA options when they were cheap. How could you be so blinded?
They could have bought Facebook if they offered more. FAANG could have been YAA
even funnier if it were yahoo amazon hulu oracle openAI..
Oracle is going to be up there soon enough.
