I have a few questions as I'm expecting an offer from Yelp and waiting for the offer will require me to turn down an exploding offer from another company that I'm not as excited about. 1. How is Yelp with respect to perceived brand value? Is it considered a good company by recruiters/hiring managers at Google/fb/unicorns? 2. Can SWEs working at Yelp(or ex Yelp) comment on the learning and growth potential for a junior engineer, compared to companies like Microsoft/Google etc. The company structure is flat with no levels, titles etc so how does it translate to levels when applying to other companies? 3. How frequent are layoffs/PIP and how is the work life balance in general? Thanks! Current TC 135k 2yoe
Can talk about these. 1. No issue with branding, we’ve engineers from FANG and we’ve people went to FANG from here. 2. Best company for Jr. Best culture for engineers in terms of growth. We’re introducing level in a couple of months is what I’ve heard. 3. I’ve not heard any layoffs in my last 3 years, yelp does great job in interviewing and training candidates which leads to a very few PIPs. Thanks.
Hey thanks! I don't know anyone within the company so this was very helpful. You mentioned training, does Yelp have some kind of a induction/training program for new hires?
They’ll assign senior engineer as mentor for the first few months, I found it super useful. You can ask any question to him or her without any hesitation.
Yuk - , I personally hate their arrogant CTO - mark stoppleman , had an argument with him and he wasn’t backing down , I had specific questions about business practices. Rest of the company folks are decent
Mark left the company a while ago.
Seems to have good engineering culture.
Very easy to make an impact and get recognized. Only 600 engineers with most teams being 6-14.
Yes that's one of the reasons I interviewed at Yelp. However, I also know that at most companies there are teams that are career killers. Can you name a few teams/orgs that do boring/unimpactful work that I should push the recruiter to change if offered one of those teams?
Cashback is a dying and soon to be dead team. Local services is the new hotness in the company. Pm me if you want more details
DM me if you’ve more questions about anything and want to chat.
Hello, I recently got an offer from Yelp and am considering them. The thing that worries me is the financials of the company. I read the letter by SQN, one of Yelp's major investors where they suggested Yelp take some very aggressive action to cut costs to hit 30% EBIDTA target for 2023. In light of this, do you consider Yelp to be a stable company? Are people constantly worried about layoffs?
Are you excited about working at Yelp? Look up their track record and you'll see that they are slow to capitalize on the advantage they had. If you're more concerned about your career growth, I think it's not bad
I'm definitely excited about the work, the tech (based on my interactions during interviews) and the product. The only thing I'm concerned about is how it'll impact my next career move. And also now that you touched the subject, hoping that it doesn't turn into Oath/eBay in the next 2-4 years as I've heard that employees there are constantly worried about layoffs/orgs shutting down.
About your next career move - I don't think it'll impact much. You're most likely going to get reach outs by recruiters of FANG. It's up to you to convert it to a job. Yes, I see the uncertainty but hey, who knows what happens in the future. Yelp is definitely not a bad company and the talent there is better than Oath/eBay. If you're more worried why don't you interview at Amazon? It's going to be really easy for you. Amazon bar isn't high at all.
