Just wondering how FAANGs count YoE when someone has a PhD (in a relevant field, done at/in cooperation with industry). I've seen 1.5yrs floating around. Is this correct?
It depends on the phd. Highly relevant ML topics? 3-4 years. Random algos nobody cares about? 1.5 if you’re lucky.
There's no such correspondence, there is correspondence to levels, you get hired as L4 or L5 straight out of PhD, and typically as an L6 for junior faculty at a university.
I wouldn't say it necessarily counts as 'years'. It often opens up roles that you wouldn't be able to get otherwise (I think this kind of gatekeeping is messed up, but that's a separate discussion). If you decide to not take such a role and something generic yeah about 1-2 years Sometimes your dissertation is super closely related to the topic of your team and you may get 3-4 years.

Should we be faithful to companies/team/mgr?
Most people straight out of PhD get hired at Meta as an L4, which I think takes a typical new grad about 1.5 years to reach. It’s much less clear cut about how the counting works once you have PhD + some post grad work experience.
L4, or Meta E4 usually requires at least 2 YOE, I think 2-5.
