A recruiter at Google told me that, so I want to ask Googlers at Blind, before you join Google, how much of your time at work is spent on coding? I found I spent around half of my time on meetings, writing/reading docs, Slack with someone, etc. How could a SWE spend 80%+ of the time on coding only? TC: 125k (non-US) YOE: 3.5 #google #coding #googlerecruiter
I put the same thing down that you did, it's some bullshit metric that's self-reported. Look at where I'm at now. 🤷♂️ You'll be fine, literally don't pay attention to this.
Isn’t 50% low for 3.5 yoe?
I think it also depends on project
Who cares, Google is shit now, like every other company
You are misinterpreting this. If you say 50-75% of your time is spent in coding, the recruiter takes it as your job is not code heavy. 25-50% of your time is spent in non-coding related tasks. So maybe you are also a PL or TL or Mgr besides your SWE role. Maybe you spent some time with the CEO's wife who knows. Next time you report a metric, always clarify that except time spent meetings and learning, 80-90% of your time is spent on coding. That's what SWE was supposed to do. And that's what recruiters typically mean. An average SWE spent 20-30% time in meetings at Google, after that there is exploratory coding, social events, gaming, coffee chat, food. You barely code 25-30% of your day.
Then it make more sense, although I think they should improve the wording of the question a bit. The exact wording in the questionnaire: What percentage of time (working hours) are you currently spending coding?
Agreed on wording should be improved.
Hi OP I am in Japan as well, are you applying to google Jp or elsewhere?
elsewhere
Kind of unrelated, but how is Indeed JP doing after the big layoff announcement?
morale is low
Self reported bs metric. Just say 80. They have no way to verify this. It’s an idiotic criterion to begin with
The more senior you are, the amount of time you generally spend coding decreases. So these things are very variable.
