Think you deserve a promo and not getting it? Think you deserve better comp and getting strung along? If your direct manager has gone to bat for you with no results, QUIT. I am a manager who goes to bat for my reports. But I can only do what I can do and if our director/vp doesn’t support, you HAVE to do your part and quit. It’s the only way upper management is going to understand that food/ping pong/JavaScript isn’t enough to make up for 5% base increase over 4 years. Don’t sit around bitching and doing a half-assed job browsing reddit on your phone. Have some balls. Go get that promo/raise somewhere else. Send a message. Do it for the people who come after you.
About to do it soon actually. Good advice
great advice
Isn't it part of your job to upsell your team? WTH do you get paid for if you don't have those skills?
Of course, but I have to work within the constraints of the system that upper management sets. For example, at PayPal, last review cycle they had the bright idea that since the stock did so well, we didn’t need to give salary bumps. No matter how good of a manager you are there was simply no money to give.
Amazon does this as well and it’s absurd. “Great job doubling the stock value this year! Your reward is nothing!”
Doesn’t the same advice apply to yourself? You went to bat for your team (which is your job), and _failed_..so, don’t _you_ need to quit your job?
Yes, it applies, but at a different scale. If I have a team of 10 and I can help 1 of them, I’m going to do that. My quitting doesn’t have the same impact as an engineer quitting, to tell the truth. Once there’s nothing more I can do, or something truly egregious is happening, then yes absolutely I should quit.
When did you move from management to IC? I'm a principal IC and feel like I'm getting stuck endlessly working on releases while management at the same level are busy in meetings and delegating all work. They are quick to shift blame while at the same time happy to take all the credit when things go well. Planning to make lateral move to management within the company. Any suggestions?
Great point.
You know OP, it's time for you to quit too.
K
Yes!!!!
Don’t listen to this guy. Keep browsing reddit.
Quitting your job is one of the best ways to increase your salary AND get a promotion. And homies. If you're at Twitter, ask your boss for an increase before you go out and interview.
