Zelle Transfer Scam?

I walked in at BoA ATM to withdraw cash. There was a guy clearly distressed because his debit card was not working and he needed to withdraw $200. After we tried a few times he asked if he can just Zelle me and I help him out by giving cash. In my mind I’m like this is scam! Run away! My friends were like dude you are stupid. 😢 Talked with him a bit and made him sign out of his BoA app and log back in, which he was able to with his Touch ID. Figured no one ever really helps any stranger these days so I took the $200 risk. He sent me $200 through Zelle and it’s already in my checking account. Was I scammed?

So, you got money and you think you are being scammed??

Well scammed because I gave him cash and wonder now if he will call his bank and say his transfer to me was unauthorized. I’m confident it’s all good, just putting this out there to see if anyone has heard of such thing before as a scam.

Zelle requires the receiver to reverse the payment. The sender cannot unilaterally do it. Unless some next level social engineering fools the bank customer agent (unlikely)

This is why Zelle is a horrible idea if you’re transferring money to a stranger. Nearly instantaneous with no mechanism for reversal.

Or just have the stranger request the transfer. So you know it’s going to the right person. They literally built this into the service.

You can setup a atm withdraw with just a phone, no need for a card or this risk. Not a scam probably.

Sometimes it's good to take little risk and be angle in someone's life. What if he genuinely was in trouble and you helped him. He would be so grateful to you. The world today has become so manipulative that people are afraid of doing good things.
