Heard from my friend working at Zillow that their CTO has announced they will stop hiring SWE from the US, and all the headcount including backfill will be hired in Mexico, except the highly skilled jobs such as applied scientists will remain in the US. It looks like the explosion of computer science / SWE around the globe has allowed the higher ups to save money. Whether they will succeed is another topic. Companies had tried that trick many years ago outsourcing jobs to developing countries but failed. But will they succeed this time? Considering we have used to working remotely and the infrastructure for remote jobs has matured. As long as they can speak English and do their jobs, this decision doesn’t look good for many high paying SWE in the US.

This is coming from the same exec team that netted an $880M loss trying to flip homes during the hottest real estate market in 60 years. They don't exactly have a stellar track record of decision making.
Zillow is in a death spiral. As an exec, you focus on cutting costs when your growth is low or your losses are high. In zillows case it's both but in either the best engineers won't work for you anyway
This is probably the most likely explanation. Housing inventory is low, which is not good for zillow.
This is an age old argument. If it worked all the tech jobs would have left the US 30 years ago.
The world is more connected than 30 years ago. It is very easy to spin up developer centers globally.
If that were as productive as having a development center in the US everyone would be doing it. Our overseas development center still doesn’t get the same high profile work that is done in Redmond.
Its not like Zillow has that many highly paid SDEs that a second growth wave will not absorb. However, short term decisions like these where you attrition your best talent as a side effect leads to decline in company growth. Rather than saying sorry we only have cheap jobs that do not require good talent how about flipping to a leadership that can make higher quality decisions that can bring in higher value projects?!

Might as well just replace every one with fresh graduates intern that work for free. No visa sponsorship needed, and there are plenty of unemployed graduates looking for work. Just tell they work for "exposure" I wouldnt be surprised if they managed to stay unprofitable even with zero cost intern labor.

They might succeed. The standard of comp sci education internationally has gone up tremendously over the past decade and now rivals America. Some may argue that it's even better. Massive outsourcing may be the new reality... Only time will tell.

It's really because the US has elevated the globe with all the money pouring into foreign countries due to all that capitalism everyone hates so much. The irony and hypocrisy is solid thick.
