Got a Zillow offer for Principal at 280k TC. 60k better than what I make now but the hiring manager has much less experience than me (2 vs 10 years) and also seemed very inexperienced when I talked with him. Worth going for 60k bump? Also worried about Zillow on resume vs Microsoft for the next move.
No..
Why not go, then get "lured" back to ms? Sometimes that's the only way to get serious bumps is to make those jumps. I have a friend who did that, ms -> amzn-> ms with about 100k+ on two years.
Yeah. It is sad to have to do that to get a real salary adjustment, but thatβs how is done. I know a jerk did exactly that: MS -> Zillow -> MS. He is at least level 68 now.
Current level at MS
Experienced managers don't always equate to good managers, just as inexperienced managers don't always equate to a bad manager. If you take the offer make him look good and he should take care of you if he is an ethical manager .
Second gpal72, inexperienced doesn't equate bad, There are a lot of awesome young managers in Z, Also principal is hard in Z, you must be awesome to get that. Also Why are you worried abt Z on the resume? 1)You get to work on the coolest technologies on normal projects 2)You can get to work on what you want for 3 weeks of the year.(Hackweeks) 3. public company hence stocks are less dangerous 4. Almost every major company has called since im here. You can mention the top 10 and each and every one called and I'm not even your level and dint even apply to one of them. 5. See best places to work in glassdoor and Z is in top 10 For last 2 years
+ great product

Brother beaten severely as a kid. Doesnβt speak to dad at all now.
60k's a 30% raise bud. Yeah there's risk due to a less experienced hiring manager, but two years is nothing to scoff at.
Yeah he appeared to be no better than few 60s and 61s I have mentored, not happy about having someone like that above me.
280 - 60 = 220. 60 / 220 = 27 percent. One should not leave for less than 20 percent. Given the manager is useless you will be scapegoated immediately after he fucks up. That 7 percentage point margin goes away fast after you hate your job. Keep looking.
