Zoox offer evaluation
L5 offer from zoox. Senior engineer position. Base: 225k Sign on: 50k Amazon RSU: 130k/3 year vesting Stock appreciation rights: 100k shares, two year cliff, 6 year vesting (50% vests after four years) TC: 285k (averaged over three years not including stock appreciation rights) Yoe: 9 post PhD I’m happy with base and bonus. Hard to evaluate the stock appreciation rights. The six year total vesting with having to wait two years to get anything seems like a long time in the startup world. According to their projections at min it should pay out nearly 100k per year averaged over first four years. Altogether 385k expected but unsure. Also right now WLB is great but tc is 175k and very little increase over the years. Update: might be moot since commute would be 3 hours (1.5 hours each way) when they switch to in person. I do prefer in person but I have the option now if working from home 4 days a week.
What is stock appreciation rights?
You don’t get ownership. Instead you get whatever it appreciates. I guess it’s like the goal of options?
So how does that work? I have 100,000 rights and Zoox shares are worth $3 currently and it appreciates to $6. I get $600K or $300K?

Hey, I got an offer from Zoox recently: L5 offer from zoox - Engineering Manager Position Base: 210k Sign on: 105k Amazon RSU: 145k/3 year vesting Stock appreciation rights: 95K shares, two year cliff, 6 year vesting (50% vests after four years) TC: they claimed 400K TC (but I didn't do the math personally) Yoe: 8.5 post MS (I am M1 at Apple Now)
That sign on!!! Did you join eventually. Also what on earth ZARS and how do you value them? Could you liquidate them?
I didn’t accept the offer. ZARS is guaranteed to be cashed out based on the current valuation, but you can choose not to sell back to Zoox and wait for ZAR to appreciate. Since Zoox doesn’t plan to file IPO and it is acquired by Amazon, I am not too fascinated by its future.
