Zuckerberg's unforced error with news sanitization

It's perplexing to me that FB would intentionally wade into political waters and throw itself in the middle of such contentious issues (fake news). Regardless of how credible the FB partners vetting news stories, there will be never ending criticism from all sides of the political spectrum when the results don't line to ideologies. What is the upside here for the FB business? Seems like an unforced error. Discuss.

Actually I feel it makes more sense. Fake news is a topic hard to define and sometime even reputable news organization mistakenly report news that turns out to be fake. Putting the blame on someone else will make it easier to avoid being blamed

Seems counterintuitive to avoid being arbiter of truth by having a direct hand in deciding who is the arbiter of truth.

The media was eating us alive and we had no choice but to do virtue signaling until we can finish executing their destruction. I can't imagine they will ever get back the ratings that they lost over the past twelve months. Why do you need someone from CNN to tell you what President Trump said when he tweets more than they do?

Soros funded censorship. It's a crock of poop. Who is the arbiter of fake? Yep, some independent liberal orgs.

Do you actually think Soros is some blood-quenching reptilian? Or are you just trolling here?

Microsoft edsnow Dec 19, 2016

Not trolling, he actually is

I don't think they had a choice here otherwise I think a lot of people would start abandoning the platform. OTOH it would have been nice to have done something like this long ago. I and others I know have been complaining about this for a long time. In the end they can't define truth or fiction but can only give hints that it might not be true. But as mentioned this might lead to people not believing it as it might be considered to be Facebook gaming the system. This will be a fascinating experiment.

A lot of employees feel strongly about it. Probably most users don't actually care

That's the difference between fb and msft employees.
