I would imagine 996 is always companies in China (and maybe India? Idk). 9am-9pm 6 days a week is insane in US, I don’t think any company could dare to demand such a thing here

I work 996 most of the time - Squarespace pushes hard on an outward image of great WLB (to justify poor comp), but in reality it is hit or miss depending on team. My team has the worst WLB of anywhere I’ve worked. The endless tech objectives & strategy docs from the SRE org and our principal engs on how to make it better are frustrating - we are just chasing our tails and none of it actually makes things better. There’s no accountability so the people leading the bad strategies just shuffle the blame elsewhere and keep on truckin’ while many of us have stressed out lives as a result.

There's a big gap between 996 and true WLB. I work about 70 minutes extra each day (20 min before official starting time to 50 min after), and I'd prefer to not have to do that. Incidentally, even the notorious Japanese companies don't make you work on Saturday. When I started, we were at work from 8:30 AM to 9 or 10 at night, but we didn't have to work on the weekends.
