Why did FB buy Giphy?

I dont get it. They could have just created Giphy themselves, since Gifs arent copyrighted. Crawl through all GIFS in Giphy, index them and save 400 million. (i am probably wrong, therefore please someone clarify)

What data is associated with Giphy? Do they collect data?

Apple CutePotato May 15, 2020

Do they collect data? Everyone collects data. Even games collect data Data is what makes CEO’s wet

The default answer to all things FB - Data lol 😂

Microsoft Clippy3.0 May 15, 2020

For the lulz. Zucc was bored one day looking at memes.

Uber s4batical May 15, 2020

Could be copyright. Wonder if people who post on Giphy relinquish copyright like Instagram. Also it’s a good addition to their main product

Facebook 23 🐐 May 15, 2020

Papa zucc wanted to shut down the memes he’s in. Watch out. Your company could be next

Can't cuc_k the zucc

Same reason giphy required 150m to be built ;)

50% of traffic on giphy comes from Facebook. Why would I not acquire such a critical part of my content creation funnel.

GrindHigh OP May 15, 2020

Because it’s just a simple ass gif search that they can recreate. Just as Apple did in Imessage

Intuit MHIX47 May 18, 2020

I like to think of giphy as content creation platform, even if it is ridiculously simple ass gifs ;) Any content that helps Facebook or insta increase user engagement is fair game. Likely Facebook already includes usage of gifs in their ad models, I imagine they might be able to model better now that they also know where else it might be used.

Intuit MHIX47 May 15, 2020

People use gifs as a currency in their reactions.

Genesys washtub May 15, 2020

Because they can.

Pinterest blipin May 15, 2020

OP, because giphy gets posted in places where FB can’t reach and now it will, yeap, now FB will know what happens in code reviews in your companies with a simple cookie or snippet delivered from giphy.

T-Mobile WashUrHnds May 15, 2020

We use giphy in slack.
