Soooo I've been laid off from a company a couple of months back. Now its corporate lawyer reached out via text saying wants to talk. Left me a voicemail and return email address (which I recognize) talk about what? lol I'm thinking I shouldn't engage. Thoughts? (also, I never mentioned the company name on any online posts, so I'm not afraid of any legal action) also2: a reporter from one of those main outlets (think wsj, nyt, bloomberg) reached out... but I didn't engage either update: My private lawyer said there is no much upside in engaging with a conversation with corporate lawyer... If it were serious, corporate lawyer would have followed up. So probably nothing serious.
Definitely find out what the lawyer wants, but don’t agree to do anything or answer any questions. If they ask you questions, just say “I don’t work there anymore, so I’m not comfortable answering any questions at this time.” If they insist, all you say is, “I’m sorry but I’m not comfortable. I’ll have to get back to you.”
100% find out what they want. Just don’t say anything.
Okay. You did something that triggered the corporate lawyer AND the reporter. You are not telling us everything. You are not seeking suggestions. You are seeking validation that you will be okay if you ignore them, or at least ignore the corporate lawyer.
This
I'd imagine the reporter one is unrelated. It's not like I'm a corporate vp that did a ted talk on how my day in life as a laid off employee was. I'm just an average staff engineering joe maybe the reporter just wanted some insider info on the layoff (it showed up on the front page of the journal)
See what they want but don’t give out details. They should give you everything you are interested in! And keep it at that
If it's important the attorney will send certified or registered mail to your home address. I'd ignore any requests until you receive something definitive in writing other than "I want to talk."
Sometimes it’s good to talk to lawyer and understand what’s up before being blindsided by a lawsuit.
Nah, if there’s an issue they are only helped by building a constructive relationship with them, hearing the person out has no downside risk. They could have just been letting you know the press was sniffing around and to remind you of nda
Did the reporter tell you anything? Surely they didn’t “just want to talk”?
Make sure after you call back the lawyer that you update this Blind post and tell us what's going on
This reminds me back in my high school day… prepare for a fight 🤛 and good luck. Nothing good comes out of “want to talk”.
Do not engage.
Engage but only listen to what they say, don’t confirm nor deny anything. Once they are done, hang up and think things through to understand what it is that’s going on.
And post here to tell us juicy details
Record call.
