what are some reasons for chasing promo that managers like to hear? Please give some legitimate reasons to when managers ask "why are you motivated by promo"? TC: 240k yoe: 3 #tech #apple #google #meta
“I want to take your job one day.”
L8 here I love below: - does more than what was asked (constantly) - raises hands and says I’m wrong in front of others and is right a lot - pulls others with not pushes them down - able to work cross teams not just a task manager You do these and magic will happen :)
+1 and absolutely love this.
The one you are talking about should job hop for 50% extra rather than take the measly 5% promo increase.
Not really, most ppl are not the next level. I lead 35 ppl and all of them think they are ready for promo. It’s exhausting to constantly talk about it instead of actual work I rather actions then ppl trying to convince me
This is a good problem to have tho. Imagine it was the other way and you needed to constantly tell them that they aren’t performing at the bar or no one was interested to move up :)
That’s the issue, most aren’t performing where they think they are. I have low performers asking for promos even when I and others give feedback. Most don’t get it or don’t want to actually do the work to get there. In my career I have seen so many just bounce around for higher titles since that’s easier than an internal promo. Nothing wrong with it. I guess many young ppl think they should be promoted every 1-2 years and that’s just not feasible after entry level
No. Don’t ever appear to be more ambitious than your boss or that you will get there faster than them.
what if I am?
No shame in your game if you high performer. Do u
If they are asking that question, they are seeing you as someone who is focused on the wrong thing. Chasing promotion is annoying because it implies there is a set of steps you can take that result in a reward, and you think of promotion is a reward. Promotions are about the next 5 years, not the last 5.

Managers like employees that deliver results and make the boss look good.
